STRICTLY talking Age Groupers only,

Well I'm scheduled for the Timberman this August, 2nd time for me...  In the journey to get ready for it, I have talked myself out of taking the next step to the Big Dance - 140.6, several times.  This past weekend, I did some training with a friend who is headed to her first IMLP this month and it's impressive.  The difference between someone who has trained for a 70.3 verses the 140.6 is obvious - for the first 60 miles of the ride I was very strong and ready to launch, she was steady and evenly paced.  At mile 60 I could feel my brain wanting to change over to running, and she was as strong and steady as mile 10, ready for another 50 miles without flinching.

So, with that said, I can see how my body has changed from Sprint distance to Half Im distances, and can also see how it could adapt from the 70.3 to the 140.6 if I gave it a chance (next 13 months).  I know what the challenge is like; trying to squeeze in the training around kids, a single dad, work, etc - I've given up the rest of life beyond my two boys, work, and taking care of the house to get to the 70.3 mark - I feel as though I could take the next step - I just don't know where to start...

1)  Is IMLP open to the average age grouper like me, a 42 male who finishes around the 35% mark?

2) Is there a CT Group here that has been there and done that?

3) Is there a CT in the area of Middletown to New Haven, to Old Saybrook (Rt 9, I-91, I-95) triangle that trains, supports, works together for an Iron distance?

4) Any other first-timers want to consider this foolish adventure with me?  Misery loves company!

Thanks for reading this huge post, any help is greatly appreciated.

Todd

Todd - I have mentally taken the leap recently - I signed up to volunteer for this years IMLP with the intent to sign up for the 2013 event.  I am 48 and have done 3 HIM's and a bunch of Olys, Sprints and HMs.  I think I am in a similar situation as you, and have "negotiated" with my wife to do the IM - I dont think either of us truly know what the time commitment will be, to be honest, but I have her support (for now!).  I do believe that I can complete an IM in a manner acceptable to me (I have not set a time goal yet), but my confidence does waiver on somedays and probably will until I finish.

I am, admittedly, a bit of a loner in my training routine, as I do most of my training early and do not like to lose time "coordinating" times with others.  I live much further north than you (Ellington) anyway.  Regardless, if you have the support and the desire, and you've done HIMs, then now's the time to go for it!!  (IMHO)  I am happy to keep in touch and trade experiences and perhaps we can meet at an event.

Chris,

I'm in the same mode for training - time is scarce so I have to use every minute I can get, when it's avaliable.  Usually 5am at the Y for swims most weekdays, and weekends are hit or miss - more so looking for a few sounding boards to bounce thought, trials and tribulations off of - I many join up with a real training program/coach that can help put together a plan based on my silly schedules.

As I learn more about this, I'll post what I know, on the off chance it can help you or someone else.

What are the odds of getting a registration spot as a first timer????

Without volunteering and getting in the "special line" on Monday morning after the race, my understanding is that it is difficult.  This is my first experience with it, so I cant give much direction - I was told to volunteer or I wouldnt have much of a chance.  I also wanted to see the event myself, and I have a brother in the Lake Placid area, so volunteering meets multiple objectives for me.

Others may have more accurate/detailed knowledge.  There is a very active IMLP thread in another BT Forum section.  There is a facebook community for IMLP volunteers also.

Why limit yourself to IMLP?  It is one of the hardest to get into.  It seems like everyone around New England just has to to Lake Placid ..I've alway heard bad things about the course and the residents..some members of my local team were just up there for training and had numerous run-ins with locals throwing stuff at them while biking.

Timberman was my first HIM last year and I did REV3 Quassy half this year and probably will do REV3 Maine - still up in the air about the rest of my 2012 season. (trying to refocus my training on the weakest link...running!!)

If I do do a full I'm eyeing Tremblant, Cedar Point or Beach2Battleship for 2013.  From the 70.3 race reports - Tremblant sound great...very similar course to Timberman, which I really liked.  Cedar Point - you just can't go wrong with REV3 ..long drive but it may be worth it.  I've heard flat bike and decent run.

Have you looked into shoreline sharks -- I think they're out of Stonington.  Check out www.race360.com for a list of clubs.  I"m a member of HEAT (I'm in simsbury) but I do most of my training alone....working mom of 2 -- my time is limited..my long rides need to start early and I can't wait around.

Lots of thoughts here:

For the question of trying for an IM, I say if not now then when.  The younger the better....

Getting into IMLP is a bit easier than the past years; I got into this years online, but jumped on it as soon as it opened.  I don't truly remember, but perhaps it sold out in 1/2 hour rather than the usual less than 10 minutes.  Don't hold me to the numbers....

Part of the reason for IMLP taking longer to sell out is the start of IM USA Championship (aka New York City) and the Mount Something up in Canada.  Each of these is within weeks of another.  My point is I think it is possible to sign up online, but I would still be at the computer the minute it opens up.

If you are still heading up to volunteer - thanks.  You are welcome to scream at me to move my if you see me.

The three clubs I know are Mossman (touch base with MSA in North Haven), Shoreline Sharks (out of Orange I believe), HEAT (Hartford).  Each has different styles.  I will PM you some further info.

Training for IM is a whole other level than 70.3.  I know part of it is my age as I don't recover from the intensity, but still it is a lot of work.  So, besides the usual, SBR and nutrition we talk about, add time management to the list. I have become quite good at managing and organizing all the tasks to gain the most of each workout - more time to the work and less to preparing to work out.  I could not do this without the support of my wife.  I am simply around less.

that's my initial two cents.  Happy to discuss further.

best,

t

Thank you for the info. I am "enlightened" now to the challenges of signing up for Lake Placid. I was a bit disheartened to learn that, and to see that you can "buy" your way in through the IM Foundation if you can afford double the entry fee. I will reconsider my plan - I want to accomplish the 140.6 distance as a personal goal, not to race the race. Sure, I guess I could do it on my own but where's the fun it that? I want the bragging rights, the bond with 2200 others, and just because.Maybe it doesn't end up being Lake P, but it will be next year. I hope to link up with some people in the same boat as me, even if it's to share stories, progress, and an occasional meeting at a local event. Scheduling is tough - having zero free time now, means I'll be negative free time after the Timberman this year. Thanks again for everyone help so far.Todd

Cedar Point Rev3 looks great!!! After seeing the Quassy Rev3 the past two years and verses the Timberman, I'm easily swayed to the Rev. I may try my luck with the July 23 registration for Lake Placid, if that doesn't work, OH it will be!!My next post will be to survey and see if anyone here has done Cedar Point...Skitri, thank you for that enlightenment - I owe you one!!

Glad I could enlighten you!  I"ve heard mostly positive reviews for Cedar Point on the boards. Also, I believe entry is still open for this year -- Quassy has been the only race REV3 to ever sell out -- another bonus.

I'll be deciding mid-August which way I want to go.

I'm not ready for a full 140.6 this year - I trained for the Timberman and could never swing Cedar Point 2012 at this point.  I recently trained with a few people getting ready for Lake Placid and there's a huge difference in the way my body is running right now, verses they way there's is running.  It was crystal clear to see, and was pretty amazing to experience it - on a 75 mile ride I could have taken off and almost lapped the group on a 25 mile loop, but by mile 60 I had dropped off significantly and here they are, nice and steady - very impressive - they could have easily gone another 60 miles at that pace, where I was done and ready for a run.  So much of a mental game!!

I'm very excited about Cedar Point - 625 miles away, but it could be managed.  Now, I'm tryimng to figure out coaching & training programs.  Thanks again.

I am also going to LP to volunteer at the race with plans to sign up for next year. I have do 3 HIM, Olys, Sprints and Half Marathons as well. I plan on doing the Hartford full Marathon this year as a confidence builder. I want to get a full marathon under my belt before IMLP. I am also planning on completing 1 or 2 100 mile rides. I just finished a HIM in providence last week. I was pretty dead after there for a few days.

I too am in CT, but as others have posted tend to train alone due to life constraints. I am 43 with a wife, a 5 year old and an 8 year old and a full time job. I do a lot of training at 5:30AM. A support group from the area would be cool though just to talk about training and bounce ideas around.

Great Steve - I'm in a similar boat, I think we could get a decent support group here - I'm checking out coaching services to see whats out there for now.  My big step is signing up and being committed to an event next.  I have the Timberman coming up fast, and once that's behind me, it's time to have a lot of fun with a few late season, local Sprints, take October to fully recover, then start building base again.

My main objective for me to find a coach is to prevent and injury from over-training and to help with nutrition.  My schedule is freakish - everyother week I jam in as much training as I can, followed by a less intense week - not very good for consistancy, but it is all I have to work with.

Maybe we start a new threat - CT 140.6 Support and just make random posts on moral, progress, discoveries, tips, etc.  I log in my training here so that I feel accountable to something.

Good luck racing the remaining part of this year!

Hey Steve,

What kind of bike do you ride? I bet I've seen you out on the roads as I live in Andover as well.

Have fun up in LP!

I ride a Red Jamis Ventura sport. I am looking to upgrade to a new bike very soon. I just haven't been able to pull the trigger on spending the money. I'll have to do something soon though. Still not sure if I want to go road bike with aero bars or a tri bike.

I do a lot of my outside runs on the rail trail along route 6.

Yup... I know I've seen that bike around! I check all the bikes.

As far as a new bike: You already have a road bike, time to add a Tri bike to the stable. :D Seriously, if you're thinking IM. my vote would be for the Tri. But, that's just me.

The RT is better now that they put the bridge in, but I don't like it as much as the trails in Vernon or Amston, which is where I'm doing most of my running--short as my runs are now.

Happy training!

I signed up today for 2013 IMLP.  Volunteering as a bike handler on Sunday was a great experience.  I learned a lot about the event - its so different from the sprints, olys and hims that I've been in.  Now the fun starts!

For what its worth, I own a Specialized Tarmac road bike and do not plan to buy a tri-bike.  $650, plus time away from family, plus all the other expenses will be enough - I cant justify another $2-3k.  But thats me - I am comfortable on my bike after doing 1 loop of the course, plus bit more.  We'll see I guess - I may think differently later.

I am registered too. I volunteered on the run course out on river road from 3 to 8. It was amazing to see how the athletes changed over time. The guys coming through early on looked really strong and made the race almost look easy. The people coming through later in the day really looked beat, but were still pushing forward. I saw several people drop out of the race on the run course which was tough to watch. At that point I still wasn't sure if I would have the guts to sign up. But I did it so now the fun begins.

I am trying not to make myself crazy over this, it is a long way away, but I know time will fly by fast.

For what it's worth - Rev3 Quassy is open for early bird registration for 2013. It's a HIM on June 2 with hills like LP (in fact, some might say tougher), so a good prep race for LPIM. Discount of $30 if you register before August 8.Chris
