Yes. Yes they do!

And, although they bring in so much $$$ that weekend, it seems they really don't want us up there. I've seen restaurant owners throw paying customers/athletes out--with food on the table!

Are you going up by yourself or are you bringing your family?

The reason I ask is I have a friend who is staying in town, has a room with two beds, and is looking for someone to share/split the cost. If you are going by yourself, it could work out. Send me a PM if you want more info.

I'm looking at 40 miles away too.  I'm going up with my gf and the places I called said they will only take 2 people per room minimum 5 day stay and no sharing.

A lot of people camp - much cheaper, no minimum.  There are several camps nearby.  I would suggest checking the larger forum group.

The 5 night minimum and jacked up rates is pretty much standard around there - I checked a bunch of places when I was there volunteering.  I am fortunate to have a brother living about 30-40 minutes away.  Ideally I would want to be in town, but not for an extra $1500.

Sorry for the late reply.  Ive just now seen this thread.  I raced IMLP 2012 and could not have been happier with the race, support and locals.

For a few years leading up to it I had heard that the locals dont want it, treat you poorly, etc.  There are maybe a few individuals that feel this way but the amount of support from the locals was unbelievable.  They made the race a great race.  There were times in the race, in my dark hours of running, where either a volunteer or local would just be there, cheering you on and doing great things to motivate you.  At the end of the first bike loop you climb the bears.  The last climb into town you had to cut your way through the screaming crowd while they cheered you.  It was like a mountian top finish of the TDF.  It gives me goose bumps thinking back to it.

There are a million race reports and you should review them.  But the reason people from CT choose IMLP is becuase no only is it close, but it is historic and a tough course.  Finishing in the oval where Eric Heiden won 5 gold medals is awewome - there are ghosts there.  It is also right next to the 1980 olympic miracle hockey team building.  It is the oldest IM in the US.  It also happens to have challenges in the bike and run - as in hills.  While its not the most vertical climb in either, it certainly is very impressive.  If youre going to do an IM, make it tough one.  There are plenty of hills in CT that are much steeper than the ones in IMLP.

I will do two or three HIM's next year and plan to be back in LP for 2014.  I live up in Canton, CT and training in the North West corner was very beneficial.  If you have not heard of HEAT (Hartford Extended Area Triathletes) look them up.  There are posts for rides, runs and swims and others that will be doing IMLP.  I think nearly 20 of us did it last year.

Last bit of advice: do the Quassy Half in June as a training, B race.  Its a great race for training for LP.  Good luck all!

Todd

I was in the same boat last year. The race sold out and I entered through the IM foundation and got a slot. When I called places in November, they were booked, of course. I kept trying the main 3 places, and ultimately was able to secure a room at the Crowne Plaza, right next to transition.

HIGHLY recommended, along with multiple other places. And, to echo what Jim (MajorBC) said, it is a GREAT race.

Keep trying by calling once every 2 weeks. I would be willing to bet you'll get a place within several attempts, just like I did. People cancel their reservations for various reasons and spots open up.

Thank you all - for the words of experience.  I have a pretty good lock on a room at the Pines Inn - I hope thats a good location.  I am looking forward to getting back into a steady training groove once I get past October - till then I have a 20k road race in New Haven, two sprints, and my first full marathon in Hartford.  Then it's a few weeks to heal and rest, planning to start building base miles in mid November. (or time on the trainer/dreadmill).

About that same time, I'll start with a coach program (QT2 System) to help me along.  I was really surprised with this years results on my own, but I realize that an experienced coach will make a huge difference with the full distance of an IM.

Last Sunday was the Timberman which was a fair improvement over last year (-34 minutes) but what I didn't expect was to be recovered enought to do well in an Olympic the following Saturday. (Lake T - my first 10 ten overall finish - 9th place - granted there were only 150 racers but it felt pretty good anyway.)

Thanks again for all the help and info.

I did that lake T race too.  It went pretty considering I've been hurt for a month and haven't trained.  I was too hot in the full wetsuit so I tried to take it off halfway though.  That's a pretty bad idea I found out.  Still managed 29th which is good for me.   I think I'll sign up for Quassy as my tune up race next year.   I just bought a Tri bike that I'll be using for Placid next year.  It is going to take some getting used too.   I miss my roadie for cornering and climbing.  I can feel the difference downhill though.

Not sure if people are still looking, but my buddy and I stayed at the White Face Chalet (sounds corny, doesn't it?) which is maybe 10 minutes outside of town. We booked the room in like April or May for this past July's race. VERY clean and looks like it had been recently remodeled. Can't say if they have rooms now for next year, but worth a shot. I'd stay there again.
