Subject: Running a marathon vs. Walking a marathon
My husband and I were talking to some fellow runners at the Rock n' Roll Marathon last weekend about running a marathon vs. walking a marathon. A lot of marathons now seem like you can keep a walking pace and still finish the marathon under the time limit. We had our views and others had theirs. Do you think that running a marathon is the same as walking the whole marathon? Granted either way you do finish, so I'm not giving walkers a hard time, because not everyone can walk 26.2 miles. What do you think?

Not sure what you're asking, of course they're not the same, if they were the same they wouldn't call one walking and the other running.

I've done both, I've also ran with walk breaks, which is a third beast. None of it is easy, each is an accomplishment in itself.

Having watched the 7 hour pace group come in at a marathon, it's just as huge an accomplishment.  Either way, you're moving for 26.2 miles and that's definitely not easy.

i have some fast marathon friends who give major props to walkers because, in their words, "i just can't imagine being OUT there that long!"

either way, it's a major mental and physical accomplishment.

I agree with the rest, walking a marathon seems like it would really hurt.  It is also something that would be hard to do without training for it.  I have great respect for anyone who can do 26.2.  period.  Is it the same?  Not technically, no.  Are they both equally great accomplishments?  Definitely.

there is a guy I met who can't run anymore b/c of his knees and he 'walked' the marathon..uh finished in 5 hrs so he beat some of the runners...you still need to train cuz as aaron said, it hurts, just different muscle groups and it does take longer which is different. props either way.

I think doing the running/walk breaks combo is the best (if you're trained). You can definitely do a marathon walking but it will hurt, like the others said. Good luck.
