Hope they aren't hauling the pigs again for you!  Last year most of the bike course smelled like pig s^^t as they were hauling them right past us on the course.  My wife had dry heaves from the smell at the finish.

Other than that, typical white lake experience. Calm lake (barely wetsuit legal last year at 78 degrees), flat bike (road was good going out, not as good coming back), flat and hot run with little shade (first and last mile only). Light headwind for the last 12 miles or so (which is also the rougher of the roads but not like the last 20m of the HIM).

This can be a super fast course if the weather cooperates. It can also be miserable on the run if the sun is out in its full glory. Last year was only partly miserable at 80 degrees (for me), sunny, and humid.  It was mid-80s on the run for the last few waves and slower runners.

Won't be there this year.  My wife has banned the words "White Lake" from ever going into our GPS again. Cool

Your wife and my wife both. She made me swear to never go back there again! I've toyed with the international because that is more palatable than the HIM, but sadly I think I will not bother. now if someone else (cummon FS Series guys) were to put on a late-ish season OLY I would be very excited.

Sounds like you ppl have not had a great experience there. I have also heard that the roads are rough and the heat can be challenging...sounds like my kind of race!

It isn't that it is "bad", but it isn't exactly a spot you rush to go back to.

Everyone always picks white lake because they think it will be flat and fast.  Well it is flat but the roads aren't great.  Sure it can be fast, if the weather cooperates (wind and heat), which it really never seems to do.  Then the piggie poo last year at the Oly. The topper (at least for my wife) is that White Lake is pretty much a 1950's trailer park surrounding a lake.  We love to travel to races but White Lake isn't our kinda place to go for a night or two.

The opposite of that is what we did this past weekend at Lake Logan. Went up early, hiked in Pisgah National Forest, ate at a great restuarant in Wayneville then hit a local brewery for drinks.  Raced in cool weather on good roads.  Spent the next night 30min away in Ashevegas for a full night out on the town.  That is the kind of stuff we want if we are driving 3 hours.

If I lived an hour from WL and could drive up the morning of, I would have a different opinion.

I do live about an hour away so I expect to be there!  My training is going to suffer this week as the Grand-kids arrived last night for their week at the beach.  Today we're headed to Myrtle Beach for the "Pirate Voyage" dinner show.  Thought I'd get up early and get a run in but it was pouring here this morning.

I am in, doing it as prep for B2B as well. Hoping that there is no pig hauling this year, had not heard that from friends who raced in past...

So for those of us driving in on Friday, and not staying in the cabins, what are some good local hotels for racers?

anybody renting one of the cabins and have room for five girls? My daughters and I are wanting to do Dash for Divas on Sunday. It'd be fun to also just hang out on Saturday. Or, anyone want to split something - you take Friday night, I'll take Saturday night?

There is a Holiday Inn Express in Elizabethtown that was constructed this century and also a Days Inn (I think remodeled in this century).  Other than that most everything else is pretty dated.  You can stay in the Leland area in some other name brand hotels and be about an hour from the race.

Hi.  I'm new to this site and can't figure out how to start a new thread, so I'll ask my question here since it's somewhat related.

I'm registered for the Dash for Divas at White Lake 9/9/12.

I'm looking for a place to stay and was wondering how the cabins and dorms work.  Is it $100/night/person or is the total cost of each cabin/dorm $100/night Total?

Also, is there a place online where I can find out if someone has space in their room.

Thanks!

It's $100 per night per cabin, 2 night minimum. I don't know of a place to find out if there are spots...generally people go in on stuff together, and I'm pretty sure they're all booked at this point in time. Hoping someone chimes in that they'd be willing to share!

1950s trailer park? Wasn't that the setting for a movie (Last Starfighter) of my childhood?? YES! It's going to be a fun race! Piggie poo? Not as good smelling as cow patties, but that's another childhood memory. Can't wait to race there!

Officially got two of my daughters signed up for Dash for Divas. My third and youngest daughter has to confirm her schedule before I get her in. She starts at UNC next week Staying at http://www.tarheelcottagesatwhitelake.com

I'm debating doing the OLY myself. Not sure yet, I have not raced all season and am pretty out of shape.

Carol, that's where I was last year when I tossed the Oly in at the last minute.  Zero prep prior, and off we went.  I had a bad run, but still had fun with the race.  Do the Oly, it will be fun!

We stayed at the Days Inn last year for like $53.  Well worth it and was in decent shape.  I would recommend it as a place to crash the night before race.

don't really know anything about camp clearwater, other than there's a campsite, and we're going to camp on it for two nights.

Don't really feel all that prepared for this race, but oh well!

I stayed on the beach at Camp Clearwater for WLH '08, with my family, in my folks' RV.  It was PERFECT.

Thanks for the info. I was kind of uneasy about camping there, but those pics quell my fears.

Not too much longer before it's time to toe the line!

Yes, barely at 78.

I hope it is wetsuit legal again this year!

Any input on how to approach the bike? In other words, what are the best places to hammer and the places you need to save it?

Is there any shade on the run?

Depends on the wind.  Last year it was blowing at our backs going out, and against us coming back.  There is one section that has smoooooooth roads and is well suited to hammer (route 210 - miles 11 to 16).  I avg almost 24+ on that section.  So my advice is to hammer whichever way the wind is at your back and then the 5 mile stretch on 210.  Neither the section going out or coming back is terribly smooth or terribly bumpy (and nothing like the back stretch of thee HIM).

For the run, there is shade on the first and last mile but zero in between (and with all the sand around, the heat reflects back up at you big time (wear sunglasses). The biggest elevation gain on the run is the coming out of T2, which is about 2 foot incline (and a sweet 2 foot decline to the finish)!

If you have any more questions, let me know.
