small turnout for the 'official preride'-only 25 folks braved the rain...we mostly rode together, fairly slowly-I helped at several intersections- hammered a bit to catch the group then got off until the last riders passed-sort of an interval workout but I didn't stop my watch for any of the traffic duty

the road is still rough in some spots early on-my bike was shaking a bit, but overall there are lots of smooth areas

got to put into memory the two areas of downhill risk-at mile 31.5 and mile 45.

the 3 biggest uphills are: 8 long miles at 23, short/steep mile 9 and wakeup call at mile 5.5--there are downs/false flats during that 8 mile stretch and you should use it to get some momentum/speed going

other smaller uphills at: 7,10,25,28,31,33,34,37,40,47,52 (yeah it's a hilly course)

Fabulous downhills: Mile 0-4 down 200ft, 16-23 down 600ft (past river on right),45-49 down500ft

CAN'T Wait for Race day! Happy training all.

So jealous of all those that rode the course over the last couple of weeks, especially those that got out during this past wet weekend. Since I will be working this whole upcoming weekend I will be getting on the course on Friday followed by a short brick. If I can get Ellen to take off from work she will join, too. She will have to wait for me at the top of every hill, but at least we'll be out riding.

Question for any of those around Middlebury...Is there any way to access the lake for an open water swim?

Yeah, I know...TMI...but it helps me mentally to know that it's VERY hilly and to be prepared for it on race day. I'm not as strong on the bike as you are, Ben, so I need mind over matter. You've got that big engine to drive your bike, with years of training building the horsepower.

I will' just ride' on race day-now that I know my goal HR -so I don't blow up. Someday I may get to the point of using Power, but I'm still too weak to maximally utilize that information.

Are you planning on doing Quassy this year? I did not see your name in the participants list.

(None-the-less, I will enthusiastically take all criticisms and comments from you.)

whoop!

Got the green light from my coach to race it! I wasn't sure if I was going to be allowed to or not but looks like she's going to let me.  Very excited.

I'm 0-2 on HIM's so WHEN I cross this line I'll be pretty stoked!

There is a Groupon offer for a hotel not too far from the race for those from out of town looking for a deal on lodging.

How dare you ask such a question...

Nope, I broke it at the Tupper Lake Tinman.  I've never done this one before.  I'm excited about racing it because I wasn't sure if it was going to be used as a tuneup/pacing type of day for LP or not.

My first HIM ended at mile 65ish with nutrition problems and the second was the crash.  So when people say you need to do a HIM before an IM...I call BS! lol

I was curious if you are still experiencing shoulder issues - I have to say I finally don't have any issues and I am coming up on my two year anniversary.  Yippee!  This time last year it was incredible tender with the training regime leading up to IMLP.

This will be my fifth tour at Quassy, and last year was my tune-up before IMLP.  I am early in my training cycle so my expectations are and have to be lower than last year.  Personally I would do a 70.3 before a 140.6 simply because you are in such great shape that you just fly through it.

My tuneup this year will be the Even-up Kingdom Tri (http://www.kingdomtriathlon.org/)

PS. Don't crash

Jeff,

Good to see your training has been coming along nicely. Keep up the good work. When you are done with the race on Sunday, and you WILL finish before me, wait around a bit and we will hook up and chat about the day. I'm sure there will be a strong contingent of IMLP peeps there.

I will be happy to buy the first round! That goes for anyone who can recognnize me too...

Ha! Yea, I don't plan on crashing....fingers crossed! I haven't had any setbacks from the break, which is a good thing!  After LP I had to take about 3 months off and really let it heal.

I agree about doing a 70.3 before 140.6 and had planned on it until a volunteer wrecked that idea.

Since I live less than an hour away, driving only marginally above the speed limit, I will be coming from home with my wife-whom you briefly met at IMLP registration. You had me faked out during our photo op, as you recall, with your sling on-ha!

Little did we know that you were on a crusade to be the 'toughest competitor' at IMLP last year.

Oh very nice to be local!

The sling in a group of people provides a couple levels of protection.
1. Makes me stand out so people are more cautious around me.  Getting bumped, someone grabbing my arm from behind...etc.

2. Served as a reminder to me not to lift anything or do anything stupid.

And it worked! lol

Well, it was really the listing the mile points of all the more minor hills that triggered the comment. You'll go nuts thinking of it that way. Do know where the ones that could stress you most are. Such as the long one, maybe a couple others such as coming back up from the out & back. Also for the tricky ones. Like that sweeping left downhill everyone brings up, or a few other places.

Keep that fairly short, where you have the miles marked fairly exact. The rest of the things, I just know there are lots of hills there and always expect one to be coming. I never rode the course ahead of time, only drove it twice. But drew from my training on how to take various parts of the hills. As much as we want to analyze things, break it down numerically, cycling still very much takes some feel to do well with. Especially on a course like this.

Remember, my powermeter failed 5-6 minutes into the ride, before the first turn on the course, so I didn't have it available. HR data was also reading 220+ the entire time (aka, acting all wonky). I did the entire thing by feel developed through training. Trying to micro-manage a course like this by data will be overwhelming. Don't try to substitute less training with extra analysis. Try to develop the feel more with the training you do have.

I'm actually not coming out this year, maybe in another few. I like to switch up the races I go to, keep the new adventures coming. Especially for travel ones. So far, this is one I want to come back to most, but still need something new.

Rode the course again today; first 30 miles were just cold and cloudy. Last 26 were cold, cloudy, windy, and rainy. Mistake #1 was the sleeveless tri top, my arms were numb from the elbows down, and the mega-rain drops hitting your face at 30mph on the downhills is like getting shot in the lip with a BB gun. Overall, it was WAY better than working!!!!

I am not pleased to, again, be going out at 7:45 after everyone.  Its okay on the swim, bike and run becuase there are always people you have to pass or that will be passing you.  But the wait at the start sucks....  Its 40 minutes of anxious splashing around and peeing your wetsuit full of coffee for us 45 - 49yr olds.  Not to mention there could potentially be a beer line when I finish.

It is a place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talking about a little place called the Patio and Party Area of Quassy.
