Regular  89  Little Rock, AR |  Subject: Proposal for July – VERTICAL BIKE CHALLENGE!My existing route is pretty flat. I’m going to add hills to my rides, lots of hills. I’m planning to use bimactive.com to track my total uphill distance for each ride. Anyone else interested? I’m open to all suggestions to keep it interesting. Thanks! |

I am doing Triple Bypass century too, which is like 10,000 feet of climbing, so I am all for it. The only challenge is to measure the elevation gain, not everybody has that feature on their computers |

I like the feature on the bimactive.com site. YOu can enter routes manually, with a GPS, or with your GPS phone. All 3 options will get you a cool route profile that you can paste into your own blog! |

I think this is a great challenge, but I haven't used this software before, so it may be difficult for me to set goals. I believe it does cover Canada. This is my 1st attempt to track climbing so I'm not sure about goal setting either. If nothing else, July can act as motivation to add hills to the ride & serve as a baseline for future climbing goals. |

The only site I know of (there might be others) is bimactive.com. I think that bimactive is actually a little easier to use and you get more information and the cool elevation profiles. Note - Gmap is now doing elevation if you ask it to. It is an option for both a small and large profile, but is not done by default. also It won't tell you how many vertical feet gained, you'll just have to guess by looking at the profile. |

I tried to set up the bimactive.com program last evening but I am not very savvy in that department. I'll have to play with it some more but I have a Garmin 301 so I can still measure my elevations with that. |

I just may have to 'climb' onboard - ok lame...I know...I agree with the "how to set a goal" issue as I have no idea how much elevation I currently climb - although I'm sure its minimal.

Here's what I have so far: Ride with the steepest grade (vertical_climb / horizontal_distance)= The Gasper King/Queen Ride with greatest total uphill distance = Sherpa Guide Ride w/ most impressive/horrific graph = ???? suggestions? Anything else fun to track? |

I wish that BIM would add an interactive java applet, so that you could mouse over part of the graph and get the grade at that spot, otherwise it's just a guess! Maybe that's a lot to ask, since a graph is pretty simple. I am not setting any vertical feet challenges per say, just want to track them. Last summer it was nice usign my garmin GPS to track vertical feet per ride in Colorado, then seeing what I would have to do in Pennsylvania to get the same vertical in per ride. |

This is the map from Motionbased...It said I had 1069 ft in gain and really shows the small rollers on the path better.....but....Bones in motion:
gave the same ride only 788 ft of total climb - I'm thinking the 788 is probably a bit more accurate????...plus I want to be conservative in my estimates for the challenge...so I'll count the 788 in my total to date.
So total to date in climbing: 5156 ft of climbing so far for the month of July. |
