For me I just love running, although there are days that I am not feeling it but I make myself go run and about a mile or two into the run I am so happy I made myself run. I do not find it boring at all, I'll drive to a different area and run a loop there or and out and back to the car. Sometimes I will have someone in my family drive me away from the house and drop me off and then run home. I also sometime will run to a restaurant that is about 23 miles from where I work, I'll take off from work and run there and have my wife meet me there. We have dinner and then she drives me back to where I work and I get my car and go home. Maybe find different routes, add some mileage to your runs. Do tempo run, intervals or strides so you are not running the same pace all the time. I would not do over two or three days a week of speed work. Find a running buddy to join you on some runs. Just some suggestions. I do not find it boring at all, I have even learned to embrace the treadmill. |

There are times though, for example, say I have to get a run in after a swim and decide to do it on the treadmill at the gym, and the only stimulation is either watching the old people socialize or watching some daytime talk show with no sound...yeah, that gets rough, but otherwise, I enjoy my runs. I tolerate the treadmill. But if I get outside, usually within a few minuets I fall into a rhythm and am pretty content going wherever. Sometimes I do need motivation though, say if the workout is going to be particularly hard or if I am especially tired, I think of the races that I've committed to, and know that either way, when the run is done that I will be happy I went out. And sometimes it is just about "paying the piper." I like the fact that I can just run, long and short, fast and slow, wherever, and whenever. And to do this, sometimes, it is just about getting out there and doing it. All that said, for the activity itself I can say that I just enjoy running. I really can't give a great explanation beyond that it makes me happy |

Regular 1354 Jenison, MI | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Wednesday - #255 - 2 miles Wow. I jumped on the treadmill to do speed work, and from the moment I started a very easy warmup, I was just struggling. After .5 miles of warmup, I tried to do my first speed interval, and I didn't even make a quarter mile before bailing back down to my recovery speed. I then struggled through to a grand total of 2 miles at my recovery pace with no more speed intervals. Normally I do 10-12 .25mile intervals of this speed work without too much of an issue, and I couldn't even do a single one last night. It is really bothering me. Hopefully just a very bad day, but the thing is that I felt pretty good right until I got on the treadmill. Frustrating. |

Hopefully just a very bad day, but the thing is that I felt pretty good right until I got on the treadmill. Frustrating. Last week I was so tired only half way through a set of intervals that I had to jump off the treadmill because I was too gassed to even slow it down. Bad days just happen, even very bad days. But very good days happen too. I think the important thing is that you save all your good days for racing, and get the bad ones out of the way in training Also I just noticed, 0.5 mi is a really short warmup. If pressed for time, with a warmup that short, I probably would do a few strides before the intervals. Just ramp up to interval speed, hold it for a few seconds, then back off, jog a bit, and repeat a few times. Sometimes you need to get over that initial hump, then things click. #536- 4 mi, 2 mi at race pace, did 6:43 x 2. Felt ok. Heart rate settled in at about 150, which is ok, but my legs were a bit stiff. I also pulled the trigger on the JFK 50 miler. I will be doing that 3 weeks after the NYC marathon. Which is only 10 weeks after IMMT. Not sure what got into me this year. |

Regular 1354 Jenison, MI | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Thursday - #256 - 4 miles Did a ladder up and back down by .25 mile increments. Felt much much much better than Wednesday night. I'll try to make my warmup a little longer in the future for my speed work. I know I should be doing a mile of warmup...I just have problems with patience. |

1053 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? #538- 2 mi with a few strides #539- 13.1 mi race. Splits: 6:41, 6:37, 6:27, 6:49, 6:41, 6:38, 6:42, 6:43, 6:39, 6:51, 6:43, 6:49, 6:47, and 0.1 mi at 6:27 pace Finish time: 1:28:12. Not sure what happened at mile 10. Don't remember any hills. I find that its easy to lose focus at that point in a race. Your body naturally starts slowing down at the same level of effort and it takes a lot of effort to push through and keep it going just as fast. I would have liked to go under 1:28, guess I have to toughen up more next time. My average pace was 6:43, and what is interesting is that it was my guess as my race pace for my last test run. I'm finding that my race times have been very predictable. My body is like science. Looking at VDOT tables, LTHR threshold, and feedback from training runs, I seem to always hit those targets pretty much dead on. I wonder though, if it is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and that if I just run hard, and don't look at the clock, if I would finish faster. |

Myself I do not use those matrixes to help me predict my times. I just set a goal time and try to train for it and run it. Again great job on the half!!!! |

1439 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Day 872, pounded the quads one last time before Boston. 10 mile at an 8 minute mile pace with over 900 foot of elevation loss and only 300 gain. I still managed to run 60 miles this week, I really need to cut the miles back next week. |

Extreme Veteran 1329 Wausau WI | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Saturday I was in the last mile of a 20 mile run and got a pain in my upper thigh. Sounds like it would be a groin strain. Not sure how I would get that from just running. Anyone else ever have anything like this? Still been able to keep running. |

1439 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Day 873, 9 miles on the treadmill with a 3% decline at an 8:11 pace. I got a total of 1250 foot elevation loss on the run. One last time to trash the quads before I really trash them on Monday. If anyone wants to track me at Boston I on Monday I am in wave 2 corral 5, the wave starts at 10:25 so I should hit the start line at 10:30 or so. All you have to do is text my bib number which is 13768 to 345678 and you will get text update every 10k and the finish. I am not feeling very confident about a pr let alone a sub 3:20 but I am going for it anyways. The pneumonia took more out of me than I thought, my longer runs have been a real struggle but I hoping the crowds and days will give me enough boost to get through it. |
