#709 - 11 mi progression.

Was going to go easy pace, but it was just such a nice day to run that I couldn't hold back.

Day 31 4 miles
Day 32 3 miles
Day 33 2 miles
Day 34 18 miles
Day 35 10 miles

I did a couple of fun events over the weekend, 24 hour event Saturday for a Haiti Medical Mission based here in Memphis. It was on a one mile loop. I have never done that kind of event before and I really enjoyed the energy of the competing teams zooming past me in their relays and the chatter about how many loops some individuals had made. I heard some 50 and 60 loop totals.

Then this morning I did a 10 mile event, part of a race series I am doing. Wasn't sure how that would go after 18 but I really felt great. It was in a local forest, fun mostly paved route with some decent hills and an indecent switchback section!

4 weeks until marathon #2!

Sorry if this has been asked and answered (and I don't remember), but which marathon are you doing?

#710- 2 miles.

I think I strained my soleus muscle on my 11 mi progression Two days in a row with too much intensity. I should know better. I really pushed myself all week.

#711- 2.4 miles

I planned to go an hour but my soleus was still tight despite some stretching after a bit of running. Took some ibuprofen tonight, massaged it a bit. I really want this to resolve quickly since these next 10 to 14 days are supposed to be my peak marathon training. I have some key workouts coming up that I really want to be able to get through.

I wanted to do an 19 mile run with 16 miles +20 sec over race pace, a 17 mile run ( 2 mi warmup, 6 mi marathon pace, 1 mi half marathon pace, 6 mi marathon pace, 2 mi cool down), and a 22 mile (or 3 hour run whichever comes first) on my very hilly training course.

I felt like if I can hit these workouts that I am ready to go on as planned. If I couldn't, I would consider revising my goals (which I probably wouldn't do anyhow).

I am really trying to train smart for this race. The last few weeks before taper should be a "sharpening" period, where you do as much race specific training as possible. And ideally, I would like to work in some key marathon workouts that can help predict my performance. So if I do the workouts as planned and perform in my race as planned, then I will have a good "formula" for future training.

For example, for half marathon training, if I can do a 13 mile workout (2 mi, 4 mi race pace, 1 mi easy, 4 mi race pace, 2 mi cool down), and an 11 mile workout (2 mi, 7 mi race pace, 2 mi cool down), while maintaining 50 mpw or so, then I am on target with my race goals.

Day 3, 9 miles.

This time around on the streak I will be a little more cautious, I will also do more 1 or 2 mile runs to keep the streak alive and to give my body a rest when I feel the need. I told myself I would not start another streak but at that time I knew I was lying to myself. I am still not 100% but it is only my IT band now and it is getting better so I think I can run through this. I can not believe how much running fitness I have lost in over 4 weeks. I know it will come back in a hurry but damn I am slow right now.

I am doing the Midsouth Championship Marathon in Wynne Arkansas on Nov 1. It is a small town marathon just across the MIssissippi from Memphis.

Run #137

My son finished his last round of chemo this past weekend.
Hope he will be doing well enough to start school by the beginning of November.

This is really good news. Like Ron said, prayers all around. I bet a kid was never so excited to start school.

#231 - 2.9 miles.

I read the course description. Looks like a fun course. Let me know how it goes, I may end up being one of those crazy people who do a marathon in each state (not in the same year) and want to know my options!

#712- 10.5 mi. I did the last 4 miles indoors on the treadmill. My soleus was only hurting on the hills so I took it back home and finished the run on as flat of surface as I could find. A bit disappointed in having to come back though, it was a beautiful day.

#713- 5.17 mi. Decided to go again on the treadmill to let the soleus recover, however, I wont be dissapointed in having to stay inside and running on the treadmill for awhile, since I am not sure when I will have one again. I was going at 8mph at just over 5 miles of a planned 8 when there was a loud crack/pop. The belt came to a complete stop while I was mid-stride for a second and I pulled up really hard to avoid going through the console/wall when it started back up again almost throwing me off.

I bought it about 10 months ago, they were in the process of sending out a console and a technician since we were having issues (mainly with the speed not adjusting when pushing the buttons, and the motor on one side was not working so the console was tilted).

A bit of good fortune is that my wife decided to buy the extended warrantee since we were having those problems and we wanted the extra service. So I guess we bought that just in time since now the treadmill is 100% non functional.

My achilles is aching a bit though after my acrobatics, but hopefully nothing that will last more than today. Soleus feels fine today though.

Hope it is nothing too, you have put in some great work for NYC. I just bought a new treadmill this year as well and had to have it serviced already. My incline/decline was not working right. Sometimes it would incline when I wanted it to decline plus the speed was way off. I bought one of the Proform Boston Marathon 4.0 treadmills and really love all the features on it. This should be the last treadmill I ever need to buy.

I don't think that is crazy! It sounds like a great goal. I don't have the travel budget for it though. So I make up stuff to mimic the more expensive versions. The day after my full I am doing a HM. It is race 9/10 in a series I want to do all of to get a 'road warrior' achievement and bling. So I am calling it my reverse Goofy challenge and am probably saving at least $1,000 doing it this way!

How many states have you done?

Day 36- 2 miles treadmill yuck
Day 37- 4 miles local park with about 1.5 on a trail, now that's more like it!
Day 38- 4.6 same park slightly different route still with the trail part.

Happy days running outside! Cool pleasant time in the Memphis area. I really am enjoying running every day.

Counting actual marathons (not IMs): one. If IMs count: two. If Ultras count, I will have 3 more states down in the next 6 months though.

It's a potential long term goal . But if I am not actually racing, and just running, I can knock down a bunch if I put my mind to it. My run on Wednesday was as hard as most marathons despite it being only 22 miles not 26.2. Those hills!!

#714- 22 mi. Longest training run of this training block, did the XC course 6 times including an extra hill near the start. The course is one of the more difficult high school courses in the nation from what I hear. I don't think its that bad, but its got some nice inclines. Kept the pace around 8 min/mi, but it felt more difficult than that.

#715- 4 mi very easy on tired legs.

#716- 10.5 mi - I wanted to run my 10.5 mi loop today, but lying in bed this morning I was seriously doubting my plan. This run surprised me. I expected to have heavy legs and just take things easy, but I actually had a little pep and did a progression run bringing my pace down under my goal marathon pace by the end. It was another beautiful day. Supposed to rain tomorrow though. Boo.

Here is the elevation profile/pace for the 22 mi run. I think it looks pretty cool. I have that 50 miler coming up, but I am feeling the ultra bug and am debating taking on a 100 next year. If so, training runs like this will probably become the norm
