Run #144

Thought it would be cool to do the 5 marathons in 5 states in 5 days, till I saw that it was just a loop course.

So far I only have 4 states, but also have 4 countries.

#717- 3 mi. Wheels coming off a bit. I've had a bit of knee pain for the last couple of months, not sure if I've mentioned it here yet, just some tenderness, nothing that has limited my training. When I woke up on Saturday morning, it was very tender to the touch, and really forced me to take it easy. Went off plan. Knee pain is in the inner lower back. Not the MCL. I think its just some tendonitis. I probably have a bit of muscle imbalance. Most likely my quads are too strong compared with my hamstrings.

#718- 4 mi. Trying to take it easy still. 3 weeks from marathon. Going to be a somewhat cautious taper I think.

#719- 5 mi progression. Tested my knee a bit. Been wearing a compression sleeve on it, and been taking ibuprofen, so its a bit hard to judge, but it feels better.

Hopefully this will resolve by Wednesday. Or heal enough so I can get my last hard run out of the way. I really wanted to test myself by running a good chunk of it just a bit slower than race pace, 16 of 20 miles. I can drop my volume down after that and feel good I think. I really really need a confidence booster at this point.

Day 11

I am working on 50 states too, I am at 14 right now. I am also attempting to do all 50 states in under 4 hours for the marathon time too. I better start knocking out more states soon, I am not getting any younger.

Very awesome about the four countries! What an adventure!

Having all 50 states in under 4 hours is an impressive goal too!

One state in under 4 hours would seem very EPIC for me, but we all have our personal victories! Mine was getting off the couch in the first place, biggest accomplishment so far was just getting active again.

#39. 4 miles
#40. 2 miles
#41. 9 miles
#42. 13.2 miles, got to run with a friend who did her first HM distance, fun stuff
#43. 2 miles
#44. 3 miles

Good news: I found a new portapotty in my neighborhood yesterday.
(Almost very) bad news: I decided I didn't need it at the moment and I was almost proved wrong in epic and disastrous fashion.

London and Berlin are on my "wish list." Really just because they are two of the most famous. Though I'd love to put in a good few months of solid marathon training and throw down my best effort in Berlin. I'll probably have to settle for Chicago though if I'm wanting to try to PR big.

I'm pretty excited about NYC though. I remember watching the NYC marathon in the 80s with my mom when I was a kid and I remember her telling me how fast Alberto Salazar was. I still watch it every year. I feel like I know the whole course even though I've never ran it yet.

Boston will be pretty awesome too I am sure. So I got enough on my plate for now.

But thinking about it, besides those mentioned, and really thinking on a global wish list scale, I'd want to do the Great Wall Marathon in China. And if money, time, transportation , and whatever else were no issue, I'd want to do the Antarctic marathon and maybe go for a marathon on each continent.

With all the trails you have around you I'm surprised you have any issues at all.

My problem is this. I've gotten far too comfortable taking care of business outside. You know that feeling when you are out, and you finally get to a restroom stall and you cant even manage a belt or the lock on the door, when your body goes from semi- emergency to Defcon 1 in about 5 seconds because you know relief is at hand. Well, its pretty much gotten to the point where my body has the understanding that the whole world is one big restroom stall, and it really only gives me those 5 seconds.

#720- 7 mi progression

#721- 6.3 mi. I really wanted to do my last long run today. When I stepped out the door I thought maybe I could pull it off. My left knee is still giving me issues. It is sore every day, and I can't really hop on that leg without genuine pain. I ran 2 mi warm up, then 4 miles just above marathon pace. I ran 1 mile loops locally, my next to last loop, my knee twinged a bit, then it "twinged" about 3 times on the last loop, so I just brought it in.

It is a bit frustrating because I am so close to being where I need to be fitness wise, and won't be able to close these last few weeks out the way I want. I feel it really is going to come down to a few seconds per mile either way, and every last workout counts. And frankly, I just haven't been able to get it done this last week. I guess I will consider this a long taper. I can't afford to deal with a full blown injury at this point, especially with the 50 miler coming up 3 weeks after NYC.

Five days a week, the dog and I are out before dawn on our suburban streets. If I know I'm going to have to play an away game, I head to the golf course nearby where there's a portajohn. The new portajohn I discovered (and in my hubris, decided I didn't need) is on the other golf course that's a little further away and the route to-from is right on the main drag: lots of traffic and no cover. On the weekends, I have plenty of time to play a match or three in my home stadium before I head out to the trails.

As someone in another thread said, "never shake the hand of a distance runner wearing only one sock."

Still nursing the old hamstring along. I *really* hate the end of triathlon season. I have gained 7 lbs, I think, because I've backed off a little without regular racing and to try to recover a bit.

I really need to get to this offseason this year. I'm still running well, but stuff is breaking down a bit. I'm a lot more achy than usual, a bunch of little things really with the knee at the top of the concern list. Knee is tender to the touch, but I can still run on it, and there is no heat or discernable swelling, so I'm just going to roll with it. Just about 5 weeks until I can lay off a bit. Though the majority of what is left is taper and recovery between races.

#722 -2 mi. Took it easy, trying to play smart, but really wanted to do more.

#723- 8.5 mi. Knee still sore, but I was fresh enough without the long run this week to run hard today. Ran a hard progression with my last 5k sub 19:30 which is good for me for a training run. My splits were encouraging 7:57, 6:50, 6:47, 6:45, 6:42, 6:30, 6.23, 5:55. I felt comfortable until I dropped the pace to 6:30 and under.

#49. 10.5 miles
#50. 2.7 miles
#51. 3.1 miles

I did a 10 mile race Sun in 1:47, some trail, switchbacks and lots of hills. I did the same race two weeks ago in 1:55! I think running every day is really helping me. I am also finished biking long distances for the year and I think that added fatigue was affecting my run.

I am thinking of doing NO full in January. Anybody done that?

#729- 6.2 mi
#730- 4 mi
#731- 10.5 mi

Had to correct my count, must have gone off somewhere. I started this streak on 10/22/2012, and today is was the first run of my third year of streaking!

Still struggling with injuries. Everything just sort of went at once. I really pushed myself this year. I am in a cycle of feeling good every other day or so, but if I run hard, then next day I am back to square one. I really just need a few weeks of easy running. Since that's not happening for another month I will just have to be cautious.
