Day 74, 10.7 trail miles. I ran a different trail this week, only 1400 foot elevation gain. Tried out my new trail shoes, Altra Superior 2.0 and I must say I like them so far. Good grip on the trail today, a mix of big stone, small stone dirt mud and several stream crossings and lots of roots just waiting to trip you up.

I am considering the Altra trail shoes. They generally have good reviews and the wide toe box intrigues me. I tried on a pair of Altras at an expo once, and there was a weird "rocker" feel to them, like the midsole was built up too much, so I haven't really considered them for awhile, but I think I should really give them a shot. I also was considering a pair of Brooks Cascadias. Brooks were my go to brand before I went to Hoka and they never really let me down. But then again, Hoka also has the Challenger ATR that I haven't tried. Too many choices!!!

I've been using two trail shoes. The Hoka Stinson ATR, and the Salomon Speedcross 3. The Hokas are nice and comfortable, but they really lack in the grip department. The Salomons have great traction, and they feel "fast," but the soles are a bit hard and the bottom of my feet get sore on longer runs on rocky terrain.

For a road shoe, I am all about the Hoka Clifton. I wore a pair pretty much right out of the box for Boston (only 2 miles on them). I was going to wear one of my older pairs of Cliftons, but I was literally walking up and down the hall in the hotel with one old shoe and one new shoe and could definitely feel the sole was very broken down in the old pair. I went against conventional wisdom and wore the new shoe and my feet felt great, no issues at all during and post race. I don't want to only wear one style of shoe, but I'm finding it hard to wear anything else right now.

How is everyone else doing?

Glad to see you are still going. Fargo looks like a flat and fast course, hope you get your PR.

I'd try my best to pace even splits more or less, I don't really believe in "banking time'" but I remember reading somewhere that typically, even well trained athletes will run the second half of a marathon 1 to 2 percent slower, so I usually try to consider that. Given the course, if I were running I would go out with a pace a touch faster than my goal time so if I did fade I'd still be near my goal time, but hopefully I'd be able to just run it in with even splits, or even negative split if possible.

I wouldn't discount the importance of you missing those longer runs compared to last year, but another statistic that sticks in my mind is that one pound may mean 1 to 2 seconds on your minute per mile pace. Also, you have another year of running under your belt, and I feel the daily running does wonders for my endurance late in the race.

Good luck, looking forward to hear how it went.

You probably tried on the Olympus model, I did and thought the same of it. If you get a chance try on a pair of the Superior 2.0. Those are what I am running in now and wow do I like them on the tail. Not too much cushion but not paper thin either. The 2.0 run a little small though so go up a 1/2 size over what you normally run in. I am usually in a 9.5 but in these I am in a 10. These also have a removable rock guard insole, I run with it in though.

#924- 6.3 mile trails again.
#925- 8 mi
#926- 2 mi. Spent about 6 hours cleaning my garage. I pulled just about everything out, cleaned, and then put everything back. It was alot of work, and in the end, I decided that I really need a shed. I was pretty tired and it was late so I took today as a recovery day, but as tired as I was, I didn't feel tired running.

A theme here, I was drag racing, skydiving and hanging out with the guys and gals from my Mustang club this weekend so not a lot of time to run. We had a great time as usual.

#927- 8 mi progression, finished up under MP.
#928- 5 mi
#929- 10.5 mi
#930- 6.2 mi hill repeats on small hill 1/2 mile from my house. I basically just ran up and down the hill 0.7 mile "round trip"

#931- 4 mi run, 1 mi "hike", 2 .2 mi run in that order on the treadmill -my wife is out of the country for the next 2 weeks so I have to do some of my runs on the treadmill (kids are too young to leave alone).

I ran a bit, then decided to see what a 15% incline power hike felt like on the treadmill. It was hard, and I really couldn't go all that fast. A sub-24 hour 100 mile run is a 14:30 min/mi pace which is about a 4.1-4.2 mph walk. I could not really keep up without breaking into a jog. I played with the speed a bit but ended up mostly in the 3.5 to 3.7 mph range. I also had an issue with the constant slope on the treadmill. With real hikes there are more "steps" and more variation in the angle that your foot lands, so I'm not really sure if this is a good training strategy or not. I can only get out to real ascents once per week or so and I feel like I need to be doing a bit more to build up my leg strength. I'd rather stick to running like activities rather than the weight room, but I may give in and start some sort of non-running strength program.

I've allowed myself 3 weeks of genuine recovery, but now its time to start building the mileage back up and figuring out how to really train for this thing. I have just under 5 months of training. It seems like alot, but I know it will go fast so I have to make the most of my time and stay healthy.

And as far as the 14:30 min/mi pace for the sub-24 hour finish, I just want to make it clear that I have set no real time goal on the 100. The race does have an odd start time (6pm) and it is in October, which means the night will be pretty long (somewhere in the 12 hour range) and I'd really like to finish before dark the following day (which probably gives me 25-26 hours), but I really just want to somehow just get to the finish period. I genuinely have no idea how I will handle this type of race. I actually feel pretty good about covering 100 miles if my training goes well, its the course profile and the 23000+ feet of gain that has me terrified (sort of). I am actually really excited about the adventure of it all, heading out to run into the mountains in the middle of the night. I must have something wrong with me because it really just sounds like fun, but I have no allusions that this will really test me and be very, very challenging.

I think the incline will help you out even though it is firm footing, it gets you use to the incline which is steep. I also would suggest to get out and do some night runs on trails before your race using you headlamp, that is nice to acclimate you to the trails at night. You are going to great. Another bit of advice, unless you need to change shoes or clothes do not take a lot of time at the aide stations. Get what you need and get out even if you are walking out and eating the food you grabbed, you are making forward progress. You can lose a lot of time in the aide stations.

Friday - #649 - 2 miles easy
Saturday - #650 - 3.1 miles in a race - 23:49
Sunday - #651 - 4 miles easy an hour or two after 1500y in the pool

Very very disappointed in my race time on Saturday. I was about 20 seconds off of last year's time, and I had expected to beat it. For some reason, though, I've slacked a little on my speed work training down the stretch and my lungs just weren't up to snuff all week long. I took off at a pretty good pace on the first mile, finished it at 7:10 or so, which was kind of the top end of my goal. The second mile involves a bit more hill, and I had to dial back a little, came in at 7:29. The third mile has even more hills, and I just couldn't push through them. My breathing was disastrous. I gave it what I had, but it was way too much of a drop off, coming in at an 8:00. I didn't even have a great sprint in me for the home stretch. I figured the 3rd mile would be the slowest based on the course profile, but the last few years I've been pretty even on miles 2 and 3 instead of *way* slower.

Very disappointing. I knew I didn't feel at my best all week, but I didn't expect to be that beat down halfway through the race. I honestly thought I was going to have a shot at a 22:30, and I ended up nearly a minute and a half slower. Back to the drawing board for now.

Nice job on the marathon PR and keeping the streak intact after. How many states have you run marathons in so far?

2..... I have a ways to go.  This was only my 3rd marathon.

I figure though I might as well start getting some states knocked off.  Have to start somewhere.  I usually just raced In Wisconsin.  This will help me branch out a bit too which I'm excited about.  Should get to see a lot of new places.

5k's are tough. You need that race specific training leading up to them. Or maybe it was as simple as that it just wasn't your day.

I try to have test workouts for each distance to help me plan my pacing. For 5k, I would go with 5 x 1k with 90 second recovery jog. I'd feel confident if I could nail that workout at race pace. For 13.1 I have 3 mi warm up, 7 mi race pace, 1 mi recovery. I think my marathon test will be 3 mi warmup, 14 mi race pace, 1-2 mile recovery. These have been pretty predictive for me so far. I don't think I've ever run a 10k, so I got nothing on that! I

Thanks for the report, I'd be curious to see your actual splits.

And that day after run to keep the streak is always rough. Once I can make it 50 feet or so I can get a good enough shuffle going but it isn't pretty.
