imsore- Nice work on your 100 mile ultra! how many hundies have you done?

This was my first 100 mile race, but not my last! I am a Hoka fan, but I've been going with the Challenger ATR. They seem to flex a bit bit better, the Stinsons feel too stiff and clunky to me. I have some issues with the Challengers. For one, I am on my third pair, and on tougher technical terrain, they do not hold up. The soles come apart, and for one pair, the sole started peeling back off of the shoe from the front. I also have issues with the insoles curling up and sliding around, but I have that issue with all of my Hokas.

So last Wednesday they cancelled the Grindstone 100. The permits were pulled by the USFS because of the potential hurricane track. it was later postponed to the following weekend. I couldn't fit it in my schedule and was pretty dissapointed. I did find another race though!! The Cloudsplitter 100 on the KY/VA border. Tough course, rugged, 25,893 ft of elevation gain (approx. 56k change).

I'll get a race report up soon, but I actually won overall finishing in 24:21.

#1070-8 mi treadmill- 2 mi warmup, 5 mi at 10.5% incline, 1 mi cooldown
#1071- 2 mi before work (14 hour day)
#1072- 2 mi before work (14 hour day)
#1073- 8 mi night run
#1072- 2 mi
#1073- 2 mile early before 10 hour drive to Kentucky
#1074 & 1075- 100 mi Cloudsplitter Trail Ultra

Congrats of the great race and way to stick with it to find a race that fit your schedule at the last minute. Also way to keep the streak in tact after the race, I know that feeling very well when everything hurts and you make yourself run anyways.

Great job now I need to find you RR on the race. Congrats again on the win on a course you were not planning on running. You are a beast!!!!!!!!!

Thanks. Nice to see you are still running well. I hope your training goes well. So the race is pretty much 100 miles plus a marathon. The fact that it is during Mardi Gras should make it more interesting! Definitely will be an interesting post race I am guessing. I'll be registering for the Cruel Jewel in GA, 105.9 miles with 33,000 feet of gain and 33,000 of loss this week. The race will be run in May. I'll be taking it easy for the next month or so, and then start working on a training plan. I may fit in a 50 miler or 100k if I can find one that works in my schedule at some point before that.

#1081- 2 mi
#1082- 2 mi, with a 3+ mi hike with a 1200ft climb and descent.

I strained some tendons right above my left ankle when sliding down the muddy hills during my race. It wasn't bothering me much during, but over the last week it has easily been my biggest post race issue. I've been wrapping it before running, and until yesterday it has been painful and slow going. Most of my miles have been around 12 min/mi or 25 minutes for the 2 miles. I've been getting a bit better each day, and yesterday I ran my second mile under a 10 min/mi pace without any significant pain. This is still going to take awhile to resolve though. It is still very stiff in the morning, and it wakes me up at night when I move it wrong.

Edit: I finally posted my RR. It is pretty long. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

#1087- 3.8 mi trail

Got back to some real running today. I still need more recovery, but it was nice getting out on some trails today. Weather was awesome, trees are changing, and trails were in good shape. I still have a bit of pain. Lower shin/upper ankle if I open or close the angle of my foot too far. It doesn't affect my running except on steep hills. And the back of my foot where my Achillies attaches to my heel, there is a sore spot that bugs me when the back of my shoe rubs against it.

I officially signed up for the Cruel Jewel 100 in Georgia next May. I usually go easy for the last few weeks of the year, typically from mid November to Jan, but I will probably go easy until December this year and start my training then. I've never had to stick to a real training program through the winter, should be interesting.

#1088- 3.8 mile trail. Same route as yesterday. Still have the foot/ankle tendon pain in left foot, but I'm taking it easy and just enjoying the weather and trails during what is probably the best time of the year to be out there.

Wednesday - #808 - 2 miles
Thursday - #809 - 2 miles
Friday - #810 - 2 miles
Saturday - #811 - 2 miles
Sunday - #812 - 13.1 miles

Did the Grand Rapids Half Marathon with MyTeamTriumph (where we push a special needs athlete through the race in a cart). The Captain that I was supposed to be pushing (with a couple of my friends) got sick on Friday, so his family pulled him out and then my friends decided not to participate. I still wanted to do it, so I got put on to another team with 3 girls who were faster runners than I am. I felt bad because I was probably going to slow them down, but the event is intended for the captains rather than the angels. We ran the whole thing at about 8:34 pace (1:52:50). That was about an 8-9 minute PR for me. I only ended up pushing the cart for one of the miles, because I felt otherwise I was going to hold them back a little too much. I'm pretty sore and tight today, definitely hadn't done enough long runs (I did one 10, and one 12, and everything else was 8 or under). Either way, pretty happy with how yesterday went and I think I can improve upon it in the future. My plantar fasciitis wasn't as bad as my other half-marathon either. Now I just need to keep the longer runs going so I can think about signing up for something else similar.

Nice job. Any PR is nice, and 8-9 min is actually alot at the HM distance, 45 sec/mi or so (I think, did the math in my head).

I think the hardest part of WS is getting in! The elevation isn't so bad and the overall change is alot, but not crazy. Hardrock on the other hand!!! Hardrock is one of my dream races, although I have no clue how I would do at altitude. I just want to take on something extremely challenging. The Cruel Jewel is a qualifier, so hopefully if that goes well, I'll throw my hat into the lottery.

For a flat one, I'd probably really like to try Vermont. I've heard great things about that race. Which race did you pick?

#1089- 3.8 mi trail
#1090- 3.8 mi trail
#1091- 3.8 mi trail
#1092- 3.8 mi trail - been running the same trail loop every day, not going any farther, getting faster though!
#1093- 2 mi - long work day
#1094- 4.3 mi trail
#1095- 2 mi

Recovery going well. I am perfectly content on taking it easy for at least a full month. I'd like to get as pain free as possible before I start really training again. I actually do have to hold back a bit though, I really like running this time of year.

It's hard to back off, isn't it? A few days isn't bad, but it's a mental strain when you find a nice day and some free time and you aren't going out to do what you are used to doing.

Thursday - #816 - 2 miles
Friday - #817 - 2 miles
Saturday - #818 - 2 miles
Sunday - #819 - 2 miles
Monday - #820 - 2 miles following about 16 on my fat tire bike...I went out on some trails that I've done before on my 29'er, and the difference was noticeable. Going up the hills on that fat tire bike is a real workout, but honestly, you can get through any trail condition with it. I think I need to pull my seat up a little, too. My thighs were just toast during my run immediately following.

I've gained ~5 lbs in the last couple months since my last triathlon. Time to get the bike back on the trainer and head back to the pool. I've had enough of a break from bigger workouts to get back to it now.

Thinking that, to keep my daily run streak going for 2016, I am going to add in a little motivator. I'm going to set up a little side bank account, and every single day when I run, I'll move $1 for each mile I run into that account. I'll self impose some restrictions on it, that the money is only to be used if I make it through all 366 (2016 is a leap year) days. If I miss a day, it all goes back into savings. At the end of the year, it'll be used for an extra Christmas present for myself, or a trip, or something fun like that. It'd be used for something I could just decide to do anyways, but it's a nice little motivator.

For you...cut it down to $0.25 every mile! Hard for me to imagine getting 3K miles in a year. You're the man!

#1096- 3.8 mi trail, early morning
#1097- 4 mi road, felt good and warmed up after a mile and ran the rest fast, last mile was at 6:20 min/mi or so pace and I was feeling good
#1098- 3.8 mi trail
#1099- 4.3 mi trail
#1100- 4 mi road, finished fast
#1101- 3.8 mi with my wife over some rough rocky trails that were made more difficult by all of the fallen leaves. We cut it short because she stumbled and strained a tendon in her foot.
#1102- 3.5 mi trail early, it was chilly in the 30s

I plan on running a bit more next week. On Monday or Tuesday I plan on going out to explore some trails that I've never run on about 45 min away, not sure how long I will run. And then I will be heading out to Hawaii for a to visit my brother who lives in Maui. We will be on Oahu and the big island also. I hope I can find some time to get out and explore, but it is a family trip and I don't want to be disappearing all day.
