1053 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Originally posted by navbtcret Day 873, 9 miles on the treadmill with a 3% decline at an 8:11 pace. I got a total of 1250 foot elevation loss on the run. One last time to trash the quads before I really trash them on Monday. If anyone wants to track me at Boston I on Monday I am in wave 2 corral 5, the wave starts at 10:25 so I should hit the start line at 10:30 or so. All you have to do is text my bib number which is 13768 to 345678 and you will get text update every 10k and the finish. I am not feeling very confident about a pr let alone a sub 3:20 but I am going for it anyways. The pneumonia took more out of me than I thought, my longer runs have been a real struggle but I hoping the crowds and days will give me enough boost to get through it. PR or no PR, its going to be a once in a lifetime race. Crowds will be over the top, Boston has a reputation to uphold, and they will not be intimidated. I don't think you gave yourself enough of a taper or rested enough during your bout with pneumonia, but I won't count you out. Have fun, run hard, and see what happens. But please, take it easy for the next few days. Low miles, some strides and maybe 2 or so miles at race pace to keep sharp. You want to go in with a full tank. Sleep well this week, eat right, etc... I'll be following you. Good luck. |

1053 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Originally posted by Lumber Dad Saturday I was in the last mile of a 20 mile run and got a pain in my upper thigh. Sounds like it would be a groin strain. Not sure how I would get that from just running. Anyone else ever have anything like this? Still been able to keep running. I've gotten cramping in my inner thigh after long hard runs, but never up in the groin area. I could see it happening on trail runs or uneven surfaces though. If you are still running, and its getting better, not worse, I wouldn't worry too much about it. |

1439 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Day 876, not sure how I got out of whack yesterday, it should've been 875, anyways 6.2 miles today. I have one run in the morning tomorrow and then off for the airport and Boston. I'll get my runs in there over the weekend and will be flying back Tuesday. No matter how fast I run Monday I will have a great time and enjoy the day. I am sure the crowds will be really loud. I have written thank you on, my name and bib number on several notes that I will be handing out randomly along the course to spectators and volunteers. |

1053 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? #543- 2 mile run in between swim (2500 yd main set) and 75 min bike. Really came close to bailing on the bike workout, still feeling fatigued from last weekends race! When I found my bike computer out of battery it almost sealed the deal. I pushed the bike till late, just finished now, and the old adage held true, "you never regret a workout when its done." |

1439 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Day 877, 2.2 miles with some strides. I'll be heading for the airport in about an hour. Looks like decent weather for the marathon, low 60's for a high. A little breezy though but it should not be a head wind except for a couple of miles. It will sure beat the 90's I ran it in two years ago. |

1053 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Originally posted by navbtcret Day 878, 2.1 miles with some strides along the Charles river with some stride. Cool but beautiful morning in Boston. Can't say I'm not jealous. Same old routes for me. #544- 6.2 mi. #545- 4 miles very easy. I've been ignoring a knee pain for about 2 and a half weeks. I ran in different shoes today. I've been in Hokas for probably close to a year, they are pretty much all I have in rotation. Its towards the back, inside, bottom of the knee, and it hurts when I apply pressure and stiffness comes and goes during runs. Its nothing that I can't easily push through, but its a nagging pain that I don't want getting worse, and last night I was feeling it lying in bed, so its got my attention now. So I am probably going to work in a different model of shoe, and see how it goes. Hokas are a bit soft, and the knee probably tweaks a bit more in them. Also, I'm going to see if I can stay off the roads as much as possible. |

1439 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Day 879, another 2.1 this morning along the Charles again. ImSore, try a pair of Altra torin, you can get a pair on runningwearhouse for $65. They have closed out lest years model, they are cushy but nothing like the Hoka's and a zero drop. Since I switched to them they have made a big difference in my running. I just picked a pair of their Sum2 model at the expo yesterday, really lightweight, I ran in them this morning and they are so comfortable. I know nothing new on race day but I am wearing them tomorrow for the marathon. They are not available until the 1st of May except at the expo. The Altra's have a big toe box too and do not rock like the Hoka's. |

1053 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? #547- 8 mi. Ron is just past the half. Looking good, even pacing at about 7:25 -7:26 between start to 10km to half. 4-5 minutes under goal. Energy there has got to be insane. If he gets past 20 mi, and doesn't lose time, he has got his 3:20 in the bag. Go Ron!! |

Regular 1354 Jenison, MI | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Wednesday - #262 - 4 miles Thursday - #263 - 2 miles Friday - #264 - 4 miles Saturday - #265 - 2 miles Sunday - #266 - 3 miles Pretty tough miles on Saturday and Sunday. My father passed away during the afternoon on Saturday. It wasn't unexpected, but I thought I'd have a few more days with him. Early in the afternoon, I was feeling like I was just far enough past my lunch to go for my run, but something told me to stay at the house with him instead. I'm glad that I did, as his condition deteriorated quickly and he slipped away by about 4:30PM. I wouldn't have wanted to lose a single second of the time I was here with him, obviously. Later in the evening, after going out to his favorite restaurant with the entire family to honor him, I came home and went immediately out for a run. I could've cared less about the streak at that moment, but something told me he would have wanted me to keep it going, as he once had a streak of about over 5 years in a row where he never took a sick day off from work. I had to go. I wish I could say that I had that "wind behind me" feeling, but instead, I think he was having a little fun at my expense as I nearly tossed my dinner back up on the short run that I did. Sunday's run was somewhat the same. I went out for this one earlier, hoping he'd push me along, but I think my thoughts overwhelmed me and I just couldn't breathe as I ran. I kept it going for him. I'm hoping he'll push me along tonight instead. I can honestly say that one of the things that brightened my day today was receiving a text message update on Ron's progress on the course. I had forgotten that I had signed up to be informed of his status. It was very uplifting to receive those messages through the morning. Congratulations on a Boston finish, Ron! |

1439 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Thanks everyone, the race and crowds were amazing. I was cruising, having one of those great runs. I was feeling strong and having no issues right up until mile 22. Now I have never cramped up before racing until yesterday. I got one of those cramps in my left calf that wakes you up from your sleep out of nowhere just like sleeping and I was doomed after that. I had to stop and stretch it out several times over the last 4 miles. I even went into a med tent at about mile 23.5 to get some water and a banana, they wanted to keep me there but I would hear nothing of it so off I went again. I usually have a kick for the last half mile but none yesterday, it was all I could do to keep moving to the finish. I finished with a heavy limp but a big smile on my face. I am not disappointed at all either. I did exactly want I set out to do, run a sub 3:20 or blow trying and I went boom. It was also warmer than I would've liked but no excuses I was not prepared for that pace plain and simple so back to training and look for a summer marathon to try and get back to Boston next year. Thanks again for all your support and kind words. Day 880 was and I had 26.5 miles on my watch. Today 881, 1.6 recovery miles. I am back home as well. On another note my photo was on the front page of the Boston Globe on Monday, they took my photo Sunday and used it in their article about the marathon. I know it was not because of my good looks either, it was because on my red, white and blue beard. |

Brad, you and your family have my deepest condolences for your loss. I realize that a streak or a hobby for that matter doesn't have much meaning at a time like this, but for myself at least, running helps sort my head out. I can either think of things want to think about, or need to think about, or just not think at all. However you choose to get through this difficult time, my thoughts and prayers are with you. |
