Monday - #785 - 4 miles - Went out intending on a 11-12 mile run, and turned around when I was 2 miles out. Calves and Achilles were about as tight as could be, and I just couldn't imagine running the full distance. Very disappointing.

Wow. Can't believe I hadn't posted in this long. Work has been pretty crazy. I've been working too many long shifts. I'm on my feet for 14 hours, and between eating, getting ready for work, driving to work, I don't really feel that I have time to train. Hopefully will get back to some normalcy soon . I didn't really get to taper properly. I didn't do any long runs for a few weeks, hope I didn't lose too much fitness. To late to squeeze anything in now. But I did have the calf issue which I did need to rest.

#1058- 2 early mi before work
#1059- 8 mi night run
#1060- 2 early mi before work
#1061- 10 mi trail
#1062-2 mi, went to Hershey Park with kids
#1063-8 mi night run
#1064-13.1 mi
#1065-2 mile before 14 hour shift
#1066-10 mi, 3300 ft gain, treadmill, tried to simulate the first 10 miles of the course for my race
#1067- 7 mi with 2600 ft gain, treadmill, tried to simulate the longest climb of my race
#1068- 2 mi early before 14 hour shift
#1069- 2 mi before work again, went out to dinner for daughters birthday

Still haven't missed a run since the end of last December.
Set out early Friday morning on a rail to trail from Wausau to Green Bay (85 miles). Wanted to see how far I could make it.
Wanted to use it as a tune up for doing a 100 mile next year. Was disappointed I only made it 50 miles. Been fighting a hamstring injury the last couple months so I just don't think my mileage has been high enough.

My Garmin died after 10 hours. Any suggestions on a good GPS watch that will last longer?

So last Wednesday they cancelled the Grindstone 100. The permits were pulled by the USFS because of the potential hurricane track. it was later postponed to the following weekend. I couldn't fit it in my schedule and was pretty dissapointed. I did find another race though!! The Cloudsplitter 100 on the KY/VA border. Tough course, rugged, 25,893 ft of elevation gain (approx. 56k change).

I'll get a race report up soon, but I actually won overall finishing in 24:21.

#1070-8 mi treadmill- 2 mi warmup, 5 mi at 10.5% incline, 1 mi cooldown

#1072- 2 mi before work (14 hour day)
#1073- 8 mi night run
#1072- 2 mi
#1073- 2 mile early before 10 hour drive to Kentucky
#1074 & 1075- 100 mi Cloudsplitter Trail Ultra

I think my Garmin made it about 17 -18 hours or so, I have a 910XT, I brought my Garmin from my bike to use for the rest of the run. I think you can buy an external battery pack to charge "on the go."

Edit: I think 85 miles is more than just a "tune up." You may as well have just attempted 100!. Also, I don't think high mileage is absolutely necessary. It helps a ton though as long as you can pull it off and stay healthy. I averaged in the 70s or so for most of my peak weeks (which I feel is moderate), but did one long week where I hit upper 90s. I think if you cut back and let the hamstring heal, you would have gone farther, even without the additional mileage.

#1076-2 mi

I had to walk for 15 minutes before I could actually break into a run. I clocked my first mile at 15:30, and mile 2 was a speedy 12:36. Streak intact!!

My legs weren't too bad after I got going, but I hurt my ankle sliding down a muddy hill during the race, and that was killing me. It was a minor annoyance compared to all the other pains I had during the race, but a day later it is the worst of my pains. Hopefully it will be a bit better tomorrow.

Edit: I just want to be clear that I RAN the 2 miles after I walked for 15 minutes to loosen up.

Congratulations! That's incredible. Sorry to hear about the original race, but I'm glad you found a suitable replacement and still got to do it. Can't wait to read the race report.

Monday - #799 - 4 miles, didn't mean to push it but I found myself cruising pretty fast on miles 2 and 3. The cooler weather is helping with that, but it was a mistake because I really needed to let my legs have an easier day and I kind of blew it.

50 miles is a good distance for a training run, do not beat yourself up too bad about it. I have bad training runs all the time but I would not consider 50 miles a bad training run either.

The Garmin Fenix 3 or 920 have up to 50 hours battery life or so they claim. I have the 920 and can tell you the battery lasts a long time. We'll see how long in February when I run the Rouge to Orleans, 126.2 miles.

Congrats of the great race and way to stick with it to find a race that fit your schedule at the last minute. Also way to keep the streak in tact after the race, I know that feeling very well when everything hurts and you make yourself run anyways.

Great job now I need to find you RR on the race. Congrats again on the win on a course you were not planning on running. You are a beast!!!!!!!!!

Great job everyone on keeping your streaks going. I am still not streaking and probably never will again but who knows.

I recently became a grandpa for the second time so I have been in hot and sunny south Florida for the last week visiting and trying not to melt in the heat and humidity while running or doing anything outside.

Still working toward my race in February and training has been inconsistent, work got crazy for about 6 weeks. Working 12-16 hour days every day wore me out towards the end so did very low mileage runs if I did any at all. Sometimes I am starting to feel my age.

The last three weeks have been good though. I am up to 50-70 mpw and will maintain that through the month when I go to 70-90 mpw for November and then 80-110 mpw for December before I start the taper. I have no real issue to speak of other than my normal aches and pains.

Keep up the great work and keep inspiring me, lord knows I need to kick in the butt a lot these days.

Congrats on 800 runs! Hope you enjoyed your runs in NYC. I always find it fun having so many other runners around. I also like running in the park along the Hudson River.
