Pre-race routine:

I committed a few cardinal sins in this race, but since this one was just a goofy deal it didn't matter. Any pre-race that has you entering the transition next to a 2 person bike and a lady with her calf marked as "38 & on Meds", well that just ought to tell you all you need to know. BTW, we saw the lady and her friends a few times and they were hilarious.
Event warmup:

OK, this event is advertised as a fun race and we took it that way. I planned to keep next to Ann the entire race. This is where I made mistake # one. I had no idea what the course was. Talk about a learning experience, I had to not only figure it out as we went, but help both Ann and my sister through the whole deal.

Comments:

We kept a slow steady pace throughout. We swam over a couple of sandbars, which I walked across while slowing up. As we came to shore we found that we had to run under a net (the turtle crawl). Too funny watching people do it!
What would you do differently?:

Comments:

Mistake two, nothing new on race day. Oh, this was fun, I actually took my 20 year old MTB with the 2" tires. It worked well through the sand pit, however the wheel rub was a bit annoying, so if I do this again, I'll have to get a new set of rims.

Comments:

Mistake 3 was that the preparation for the beach run was nonexistent. We wound up walking a lot. But by that time we were wet from the tube crawl and we just wanted to get done. In our favor is the fact that we almost caught the Justice League of America. Ann said she felt like we were in an episode of Big Bang Theory. :)

Warm down:

Beer line.

Event comments:

The race is just something we did so that Ann could experience a triathlon. And so we could just have fun with a bit of a goal. It was a blast.

Sounds likes lot of fun! What a great first race experience. That's exactly how it should be. I think that lady may have been even more threatening if her calf said "38 and OFF my meds." I also like your warm down

That sounds like a great first event. Competing with the justice league, woman advertising her meds and a beer line recovery - what more could you ask!?

It's compulsory to do goofy stuff and commit cardinal sins during a fun race!!! What a gas.

I agree with Yanti - you have to make silly mistakes during a fun race.  Also, beer line is the best warm down ever.

Big congrats to your wife for completing her first triathlon!  And congrats to you for helping her meet her goal.  Sounds like a very fun race, and any race that has a beer line is A-OK in my book!
