Unfortunately I was about 4 hours off the pace to qualify.

But you were 140.6 miles closer than most of us. Cool

ETA: I've come to the conclusion that you need decent genetics, incredible discipline, and a work situation that allows you to train and rest properly to even consider a shot at KQ. I have none of the above, so when you do qualify I'll be happy to cheer for you! And of course, watch for you on NBC.

Good points. I felt like I squeezed every ounce of free time I had, and used it to train. I still felt severely undertrained for the event. I was good enough to complete the event, but it takes so much more to compete. My hobbies will always take a backseat to my family and work. So, I am happy to have completed the race and know that is all I will ever be able to do; and I am just fine with that. I too will be happy to cheer for anyone taking a shot at Kona or the 70.3 WC.

A friend of mine is trying to talk me in to IMLOU for next year. I'm still kind of on the fence about it though. How many hours do you think you were putting in a week? I personally think it's an awesome accomplishment, but I suspect I'd be a one and done type. I'm not sure I'd want to consistently put in the hours for that year after year.

Back to Kona now.  Who are everyone's picks?

Crowie

Macca

Rapp

Carfrae

Joyce

Steffan

Who wants to play bookie for this?  lol

The first time I looked at an Ironman training plan I told my wife "damn you have to be an eccentric millionaire to be able to spend this much time training."  It take a lot of dedication and time to train for one, let alone train for one to do really well.

On average I was putting in 13-14 hours a week from may through taper in August. My peak weeks were around 17-18 hours. That number is easily attainable with a 7+ hour century ride on a Saturday and a long 3 hour run on Sunday. If you fill in the rest of the week with 1.5-2 hours on the bike or running and 3-4 days of 1-2 hours of pool time you get there no problem. The problem is finding the time. I had to make sure my wife knew about my long rides at least a month in advance. My long runs I could knock out during my daughters nap time or before she got up. I spent a lot of those hours on a treadmill or on the trainer. I did talk my wife into buying a new treadmill for us. It is really cool because it uses google maps and you can plot your course and it change elevations to match the real course. I also bought the spinervals DVD of the Louisville bike course. I will never ever watch that video again. I have it memorized. If you end up doing IM Lou it is yours.

This guy won Kona a long time ago.  Took a 3-hour post race boat tour to celebrate and was never heard from again.

Had a sweet bike:

And some potent nutrition:

I like your Kona picks. I can't count out either of the Raelerts or Pete Jacobs though. Michael Raelert is going to be ready to make up for his penalty in Vegas and Pete Jacobs might be the only one who can outrun Crowie.

@Patrick - I loved that show. But, if the professor could build a radio out of coconuts how could they not fix the hole in the boat? I could have fixed that with a 12 pack in me. @Jon - No kids in my household......yet. I may have to do an IM before that happens just to keep harmony in my household.

Crowie

Carfrae

These are my picks. Will be watching live feed all day. This is one of the best days of the triathlon season all year besides the days I compete!!!  I would like to think once I get to this distance they will still have the legacy program and after what is it 11 or 12 of em I will be able to go to Kona but that will be along time from now gotta get my first 70.3 under my belt first!

I think Macca comes in there to prove something and he's going to have some speed. But, I don't think Alexander will concede. It'd be neat to see a dark horse like Lieto do it but unless he found some running magic I don't think so. How does Jacobs run stack up? I hate to even say this, but I would have liked to see Armstrong there just to see what he had. Now, in 5 years, how do you all see the Brownlees doing here?

I think Andy Raelert's going to put up a good show, hopefully giving crowie a run for his money.  Him and Jacobs are about the only peeps who can hang with crowie on the run.

There may be a local Schoegel racing, as there usually is. I think bob placed 3rd in his AG last year at Kona. Nuts....
