Subject: T2 and running shoe question
So I am working on designing a tri running shoe and have a few questions for you guys. (I've only done 1 triathlon so I know a little bit, but not enough).

1. What are your average times for your bike to run transition? About what percentage of that is actually changing equipment? Not getting to/from your spot.

2. Are there any running shoes that use velcro straps like cycling shoes? If so, what are they? Have you tried them? If not, why not?

Thanks!

-Greg

Yanks are elastic shoe laces that allow you to just slp in and go

Depends on race and how big T2 is with the number of participants.

About what percentage of that is actually changing equipment?  Not getting to/from your spot.

For a HIM, about 2 min. or under, depending on how inshape I am.

K-Swiss (click the link).  No, I haven't since I haven't tried them on yet to see if they'll work for my footstrike.  I use Yankz laces on my racing flats.  Pre-tie, slip on in T2, and you're off!

You don't tie your shoes, elastic laces. You literally just slip on your shoes and go. Yanks is the brand I use cheap and easy.

<30 seconds. Sometimes way less.

X∞ on elastic laces rendering velcro useless

Usually somewhere between 30-45 sec., depending on how the race is going.

Elastic laces are not only great for a very fast transition, then also distribute the pressure over your foot more equally giving you a more comfortable fit

+1.

Yankz, Lock Laces (my preference), iBungee, etc...

It's all you need.  Any shoe + elastic laces == fast transition.

About a month ago, i picked up some new laces at a race expo.

They are called Xlaces.

You just pull them through and they have little bumps that hold. I really like them. They are better thah the other lock, bungee laces I have tried.

First tri I used normal Brooks running shoes with normal laces.

Getting of the bike my hands were shaking and I could barely tie my shoes.

resulting in a slow T2 of 1:20

Second tri I used Zoot Kalani  while they have normal laces, I never open or close them.

Just slip my foot in and off I go.

My total T2 was 48 seconds (fastest Clyde). Entry was on end , exit the other end.

My bike was at the top row.

I get out of my shoes before the dismount line. So all I had in T2 was get to my spot, take of helmet, rack bike, put on shoes, run out to exit.

I did all this in 48 seconds, though felt I could have done it a bit faster.

Out of that time putting on shoes was probably less then 10 seconds.

I've been racing the Pearl Izumi Iso Transitions- made specifically for T2 and they have the quick elastic laces that lock. I pre-lock them, slip in bare foot and go. I have baby powder in them prior etc. Made to go sockless and i've done several complete sockless on bike and run.

T2 average times are usually very short (under 1 minute for experienced racers).
Time changing equipment is about 10 seconds for me. Rip off bike shoes, slip on running shoes (no tying laces), grab visor and put on while running out.

I am curious about your product  -- what are the benefits of the shoe you're designing compared to what's already out there? Hoping you're doing way more market research than this, as no offense, but your questions don't seem to lead to a product that is needed or isn't already out there

My kids were velcro, but I'm not looking for anything velcro racing shoe-wise.  How would the velcro system be better than all these various laces we're talking about?

1. Usually end up being in the top 1% for a race with fast transitions for both T1 and T2. Chaning equipment? not much other then helmet and if it's a long race i may put socks on, but just a standard bike to run transition.

2. No idea and if they had them? I doubt I would use them since I have specific shoe requirements as I roll my ankle a lot, use orthotics and supinate
