I am doing my first ironman this coming summer and got my M dot already and someone at my gym was asking about it and started to argue with me saying rude stuff to say the least.. He couldn't grasp that i am GOING to complete it i know it.. What do you think? Was this wrong of me?

Yeah, it was wrong of you.

Very few people who DNF an Ironman thought they would DNF it. Most people go into the race with the plan to finish. It's a long days. Things go wrong that can keep you from finishing the race.

People get a MDot tattoo once they have COMPLETED an Ironman distance race. Not when they plan to. Thus, if you have one, it says "I have done one". Not "I'm planning on it".

.......don't celebrate the finish BEFORE you finish.

This. In any capacity.

I was not superstitious about wearing "Ironman" logo gear (it's on everything including my favorite socks) but I was about "Finisher" gear or even something as simple as being so arrogant to think nothing will go wrong on the big day.

My vote is with the majority that this is a bad idea.  The OP did not mention if it was a temporary (aka fake) tattoo?  In that case, it may be 50% okay IMO.

I'm with the majority here too. until its earned it shouldn't be there. My wife wanted to buy an ironmate shirt at my last 70.3 but I told her know cause its bad karma and I hadn't done what it take to be an ironman yet. That is just my personal opinion since you asked, but I wish you luck and hope you finish to earn that M dot.

It's all relative from one level to the next.  It's broken down like this:

Some 140.6 finishers say, "Finishing 70.3 is not good enough for M-dot tatoo."

Some Kona 140.6 finishers say, "Finishing any other IM race besides Kona is not good enough for M-dot tatoo."

Some pros say, "Silly age groupers."

Entire World Triathlon Corporation say, "Suckers."

I say, "Who cares.  It's your body.  Do what you want."

Yes.

It's like calling yourself a doctor in high school.

NOT exactly, See i know i'm going to complete this ironman, your comparison to a doctor is just so far off because that requires schooling and stuff and you can't train to do that..

Yeah, cuz no one ever DNF's an Ironman race!

Personally?  I think IM tattoos are lame.  You can imagine what I think of them when someone hasn't actually done one

First of all, I agree with this 100%.  I don't want one with severl under my belt and one on the way.  If I had to get SOMETHING, it wouldn't be the logo.  Maybe something more artistic or vague.  Even a 140.6 in some nice script would be better than the Mdot to me.

BUT, I go to my pat answer.  It's your body, do whatever you want to it.  It doesn't matter to me if you want to say you were an IMer, put pictures of kids on your body even if you don't have any, put any other corporate logo on (I saw someone with a Ducati logo on their arm - I raised an eyebrow, but it's not my body).

I always find it interesting that people would have to ask a internet forum if they should get a tattoo or not.  Why not ask if you should get a haircut or piercing as well?

I know someone that got an MDot tattoo before their 1st attempt at even a 70.3....and they have never finished a 70.3 or full IM.  I call it karma.  You've got to earn it and you damn well better respect those that have completed the distance.  You're an impostor and pretty pathetic IMHO.

Aasumim this is not a troll, but I am going to take the bait anyway. Lol

Like many, I have been busting my @$$ for 3 years and am about 9 months from imlp d would never think to even buy anything wig the ironman name on it till I cross the finish line let alone ink myself.

I have finished 2 70.3 races and my wifes friends who I see periodically who know very little about the difference call me " ironman"......... Personally I cringe, and get embarrasses and politely say " half ironman", not because they know the difference but I respect the accomplishment and dedication since I am working on it myself.

So, with that said I think its a bad idea but I when it comes to.my triathlon life with training and racing I try to live in a " box" and not get all uptight about it.
And think if I finish my. IM I would chuckle to.myself and let it go.

Good luck, I hope you reach your goal.

Yeah, no question this is a troll.  Registered on the site the same day as this thread started.  Really?  I'm just surprised everyone's playing along so easily.  He needs to go back to troll school to do some "schooling and stuff".  We've had some brilliant trolls here in the past that inspired many days of debate whether or not they were trolling.  This one's way too obvious to be entertaining.

While we're on the subject of permission to do what you want with your body... Don't you think the buzz cut for guys is so PRO?!?! I think my hair is too long. I should buzz it, do y'all think thats okay? Buzzing looks athletic and manly. Plus its way more aero. And hydrodynamic in the water if you don't like caps, cuz caps are dorky.

I don't think it is tempting fate, or bad karma, but personally I would not do it.  One of my personal choices with the running events I've done in the past is that "you can't wear it until you have done it".

I also simply don't want a m-dot tattoo.

I don't have any tattoos, but if I did, it probably wouldn't be Ironman, even though I've done exactly 1 to date. Signed up for a second for next year.

I didn't buy the Ironman stuff prior to the race, as my seasoned friend told me it would be "bad karma", although the items I wanted were sold out after I finished.

Some people's challenge is a simple 10K run, or perhaps a half marathon, for others its a full Ironman, and then theres the EPIC5...5 Iron distances in 5 consecutive days. My friend is doing it now. That humbles me, and even if I do Kona someday, I still won't get the tattoo...but that's my choice.

Do what you want and what makes you happy. I have never understood the idea of "earning" your tattoo. Its a tattoo, if it motivates you, or gets you pumped up then go for it. Who cares what others think. Those that look down on you for it, think too highly of their accomplishments. As for the doctor reference, well that is lying because you really are not a doctor if your in high school, thats comparing apples to oranges. Wearing a tattoo says nothing about finishing a race, most just assume you did finish the race and that is why you have the tattoo.

Why do people wear sport jerseys of their favorite football team, they don't play for the team.

IMHO as others have said it seems a little presumptive on your part.  There is not telling when a turned ankle, or back spasms, or improper nutrition/hydration, or a thousand other factors could conspire against you causing you to DNF.  Mr. Murphy has a heck of a way of finding his way into things.

I have to agree that the M-dot is something g that is earned. It is something that the majority of people don't understand and that's why we take it so seriously. I completed my 1st Ironman 70.3 this summer and I haven't got any ink done....yet... I hope that your training continues to go well and that you EARN the ink that you got. Best wishes in completing your IM.

It has to be earned.  That's why I don't wear anything with a Nike Swoosh on it.  I've never done the Nike Marathon and therefore haven't earned it yet.
