"Ironman requires “covered feet” on the bike and run for safety reasons."

Ok... Could I wear just socks and no shoes for the run in Ironman?

Just wear Vibrams.

I saw a guy running IMCoz with huaraches; I guess that counts.

Where did you find that rule referenced at?

jdl2012 - 2012-12-10 10:15 PM Wish I could... they don't work well with my toes.  So I wear 2 layers of cycling socks... works for marathons.

Altra Adam maybe? Similar idea, but no toes to deal with. The Samson is pretty slim too, but laced. Merrell Barefoot shoes work at all? Of these I've only used the Adam, and indoors at that, but like them much more than the Vibrams. There are a few other very slim shoes that are supposed to be approximate barefoot, but I can't remember them at the moment.

I have a friend who wore socks during the run leg of an Ironman.  He said he got weird looks from the man helping him in the changing room.  Other than that I don't think anyone noticed he wasn't wearing socks.  Wear black socks, or as the race director a few months in advance what he recommends.

I have altra instincts and wore them for my IM. I love them. I love my vibrams too but I can't run in them for much longer than an hour, or in hot weather. My feet swell too much, and my pinky toes are fat and barely fit in the vibrams to begin with. It gets quite painful.

Yeah, much of my running is with the Instinct now as well. It has a thicker, more cushioned sole than what's being looked at here. I mentioned the Adam because it's very similar to the Vibrams in that way, but doesn't have the toe fingers to deal with. The curve of the Vibrams at the toes also didn't match my foot well, in addition to the difficulty in fitting toes into the spots you saw.

The Adam also come with a few insoles to choose from, and can go without any. They're too thin for me to use outside, so I only use them on the treadmill. I do that to try maintaining a better feel since the treadmill absorbs more than the ground.

I saw a lady wearing Crocs on the run at Vineman this summer.

I run in the Merrell trail gloves and they have a lot of room in the toe box
