I have been training for tri's for 5-years, year round, very consistent. In the last 2-months or so my sweat has started to reek of ammonia (or something similar). I am only talking about sweat while training (not sweat from just being hot).

I went to my doc and had a bunch of blood tests. All came back normal. Anyone else have this happen? Ideas? Much thanks in advance.

It's completely normal. It could be that your body is using more protein for fueling as you go longer or harder. It can also simply be linked to diet. Generally, it's nothing to get too worried about. If it is longer/harder workouts, you could try taking some carbs (sports drink/gels/etc.) during exercise to keep your giving your body access to that fuel source. But as long as you refuel well afterwards, it's just something that you will experience from time-to-time.

The reason i ask the above is ...

The smell of ammonia in sweat during exercise is normally the breaking down of amino acids to convert to fuel … which is not ideal … giving off nitrogen as waste.

Some people think the consuming more protein is the way to fix this … WRONG. You only need about 15% of your diet to be protein based. The answer is to ensure you are getting enough carbs and fat as these are the body’s proffered forms of fuel.

On top of this make sure you stay adequately hydrated to dilute the ammonia (but a good balanced diet is best)

The next time you smell ammonia, don't worry. It doesn't mean that your muscle tissue is being broken down, and it doesn't mean that you're doomed to stink for the rest of eternity.
