Hey, you know how trainers tear up your rear tire? I was curious whether rollers did the same thing, or can you just bring your bike as is and ride without worrying about excessive wear on that rear tire.

mine have never caused serious wear(... although I don't think that my Kurt Kinetic eats tires all that fast either)

Funny, with this new format, as soon as I posted my question, suggested "related" posts popped up giving answers too :-) I'm not worried on my trainer because I just leave my roadie on there with an old tire, but if I ever got rollers it would be nice to just bring my tri bike in, pop it on and not worry about the wear on the rear tire. But maybe I should worry :-) Or not! :-)

Rollers cause less wear than a trainer, but there is still some wear.

You should use rollers instead of a trainer because they improve your pedal stroke, not because they are kinder to your tires. Also less boring.

I know...I just already have a trainer so didn't really wanna fork over extra cash for yet another tool. But if I could use my tri bike on the rollers it would be a big benefit (I know I can use it on the trainer but its a pain to swap tires etc) :-)

Do use both rollers and a trainer (CompuTrainer)

Had a rear tire come apart last week after ~1,300 trainer miles this winter. Put a specific trainer tire on as a replacement, it is quite and seems a little smoother. I don't have nearly the same miles on rollers but those tires still run very smooth and show no wear from the rollers that I can see. Thinking back I could feel a slight hop developing over time on the trainer and now I know that was the tire starting to come a apart.

I'm curious to try trainer tires on the rollers, but not $30 and ten minutes swapping tires around curious.

I do all of my indoor riding on rollers, which was 2-3 times a week each winter. The tires will flatten out after a while, but not nearly as quickly as I've heard with trainers. I used this as an excuse to get new wheels, so I can swap them easily.

Have 10,000 plus miles on my E-motion rollers and tread wear on the tires is minimal. (Of course all miles were not on the same tires). Less wear than I would expect to have riding on a good road as the rollers are so smooth. I'm sure there is some wear but not much. So nice to be able to grab the bike and head out on the road without worrying about swapping out trainer tire/wheel.

If you do look at rollers check out the E-motion rollers....you may never use the trainer again
