I am currently IN the family truckster right now just east of Colby, KS on our way back from the Tetons and Yellowstone.  I will be there Saturday morning.  Need to get back in shape.

Very nice! One of my dream rides is round trip Jenny Lake to Yellowstone Lake. Right at about 112-miles. Now that I'm thinking of it what a great location for a Triathlon :-) Granted it's a little out of the way :-)

Yeah, seeing the excellent bike paths for road bike touring made me miss my bike quite a bit.  Would love to go back for a bike-specific vacation.  Absolutely gorgeous and bike-friendly in the Tetons.  Not so friendly in Yellowstone.

And the water temp in Jenny Lake when we hiked there was 52 degrees.  I think it only tops at 68 degrees in late summer.

I would like to do both, but need to be leaving the park by 9:45 or so to go set up the party for my parents 50th wedding anniversary bash that afternoon.

I'm good for a few laps and a short run, probably just the short course. Nothing too crazy, recovery week for me.

Hey everyone, I am having trouble deciding whether to sign up for the long or short course distance and keep hearing about the hills at the park. I have yet to make a trip out there but I completed Branson's sprint last year and had one of the better bike times without tearing up my run. Any suggestions? Thanks

Tough choice. Long course is a solid challenge, but 4 loops around a 4.5 mile loop with about 800 people is boring and potentially dangerous. The run course has changed this year, but the damn hill is on both courses as is the uphill finish.

The long course generally has more competition, so if you want a better chance at a podium, go short.

I do the long course because doing the short course seems to be over before you know it. Just long enough to start suffering, but after you're done, you think, "I had more left in the tank"...

But, we all can't be competing for our age group like Mark.

Saturday is up in the air for me and pending workouts on Friday. We shall see what the family agenda holds.

Long course should have close to 900 ft of elevation gain (based on my last few rides out there), which in 18 miles is a significant amount for Kansas, but still doable. It's the run after that you have to worry about. I'd look at each races' distance, and decide based on that. I prefer the short course stuff, so that's what I do.

I will guarantee that it will be incredibly hot and humid, regardless of race distance... It always is. Or rains...

I'd be happy with another 2nd place M25-29! It would be a dynasty! 3 for 3!

Ok great, thanks for the input. I'm leaning towards the short course and seeing what happens in there and waiting until august for the longer course at Jackson county. I'll be in the M 20-24 age group as well.

What I like about the short course is that you're basically redlining it the whole way. Swim hard, hammer the bike, then run the 5k as fast as you can. If you feel you still had something in the tank at the end you didn't go hard enough!

This is the one triathlon for me this year. And just short course. In an epic brain fart moment, it's the day after the Psycho Psummer 20 mile trail race I'm running.

What could possibly go wrong? Haven't ridden hardly at all and haven't swam this year. But I do have solid run miles.
Definite short course day, I can hopefully just BS my way through that!
Or, I may be lounging in the shade watching you guys.

Well, I'm spending the next few days and the last few eating and drinking with no miniskirt exercise. I get home Tuesday. I plan to swim a couple times but nothing wild. I guess I will call this my 2 week taper.

Isn't that your recipe for success?

I am signed up for the long course.

This race is still not filled up. This usually sells out, maybe some are saving their energy/dollars for next weeks Tri in Lawrence.

There's a discount offered by UCP. Use discount code LWH33MKY. I think it takes the $15 late reg. fee off. There's also a drawing for a Garmin 910XT, you can register for the drawing at packet pickup, the winner will be announced race day.

if you've never done this race before, it's one of the best in the area.

I wasn't going to do this, but I got roped into be part of a relay. Not sure how I let that happen.

I used the discount code this weekend and it still worked at that point.

Last I looked, water temp was 80 degrees.  Not bad compared to the last 2 years, but still non-wetsuit and warm.  Looks like I will break-in the new swim skin for the first time this season.

Everybody who's signed up should have received their confirmation letters.

On the link to the UCP website there's an error (I sent an email to RD already). The link is missing a "p" after uc so just paste the link in your browser and add the "p" after the uc thus making the link ucpkc.org.

Packet pickup on Friday is at Elite Cycling from 12 to 6
Packet pickup on Saturday is at the Marina from 3 to 5
If you're coming in from OUT OF TOWN you can pick up from 5:30 to 6;30 AM on Sunday

Comformation letter states water temp of 80 degrees, almost noodle lady temperature!

Should be a fun day.

Well, it's a lot hotter and more humid here than in Colorado. My body doesn't like the adjustment or maybe it was all the booze and bar food. I hope to make 1:30 and not walk the course. See you racers out there Sunday. I think I will be preparing for race day by having beers at the sporting game Saturday night!

Again, with the same pre-race plan as KS 70.3, you should do great!
