Newport Tri Club (NEWT)
15C / 59F
Overcast
Total Time = 40m 31s
Overall Rank = 57/78
Age Group = Male
Age Group Rank = 48/62
Pre-race routine:

Picked my Bro-in-Law up (his first race and OWS), got to event nice and early, only 8 mile from my house so nice and close. Paid dues, £3.00 more for paying on the day, won't be doing that again (Tight arsed Welshman :) Then sat around drinking coffee :)
Event warmup:

Listened to brief, then waded in and swam 50-100m up to starting buoy.
Swim
  • 13m
  • 600 meters
  • 02m 10s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim cut short to 400m from planned 750m due to temperatures.Edit: On looking at Garmin trace and from speaking to others, swim ended up being closer to 600m.
Water was cold but not massively so. I'm a bit gutted the swim was cut short.
Compared to my first OWS this was gorgeous. Water was a lot clearer (I could see my hands in the water) so I didnt have as many problems swimming up over, and into people. There was a slight problem with weeds, getting caught in my hands, wrapped around my neck etc, but it wasn't too bad.

One good thing compared to last swim, I swam in front crawl about 90% of the swim. Also, I didn't get cold ear.

I found myself on my own a bit with no one around me, so nearly the entire swim was done without a draft. Have to work on following feet.

Struggled a bit getting out on the slippery ramp.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to get on a fasties feet.

Swim as far as I can toward the exit so that I'm on the mat instead of the slime covered ramp.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Really short transition, distance wise, about 10 foot from the ramp, so no time to get wetsuit top half off, goggles/cap off etc

Giddy again, took cap off placed in bag. Took goggles off, put on towel.
Undone velcro, pulled zip down, removed top half of suit.
Sat on floor, struggled to remover from feet.
Put on socks (Pre-rolled)
Slipped on shoes (with new elasticated laces) soooooooo much easier.

This time I had put my garmin watch on my goggle strap and placed it at the back of my head under my cap. Seemed to be ok, and I didn't notice it on the swim. After I put on my shoes, I undone the strap from the goggles. Rest the watch and put it on my wrist as I was running out of transition.
I then set the watch off again when I started the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, except practice doing it quicker, somehow, any suggestions?

Edit. The time is a guesstimate. Event org only provided a total time. I went off my times for my middle 200m of the swim and my recorded garmin time for the run to estimate this time.
Run
  • 25m 29s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 05s  min/km
Comments:

I wasn't planning on doing the run part, due to the fact that I had been using a crutch to limp about for the last couple of days.

The plan was to get the swim done, get transition done, and see how my foot felt after being in icy water for 20 mins.

When I got my shoes on I got caught up in the moment and started off on the run. When running out of transition I remember saying to one of the marshals there that I'm gonna just try one lap to see how it goes.

It felt painful to start. The pain comes when my foot is flexed going up any incline, down any incline or when my foot pronates with each step. I ended up running on the outer edge of my foot. I managed to run all the way, which was a bonus.

2nd lap and foot started to feel a bit looser, so I cracked on, still running on the side of my foot. Wasn't really bothered about people passing me, or my time, I just wanted to make sure I had done over 30 min for my JOGO.

I was not breathing hard at all on this run, with a regular breathing pattern of 4:4, dropping to 3:3 on the hills. If my foot was in good shape I think I could have got a lot faster time and PB'd
What would you do differently?:

Not run on a baddie leg.

Wear heart rate monitor, doh. Don't pack last minute.
Post race
Warm down:

More coffee

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stupid bruised foot.

Event comments:

This is a low key event held each month by a local tri club, so wasn't expecting too much.

It's a shame the swim was cut short, and I think it's quite expensive for what it was. But it's local and it's all OWS practice.

Ooooh you're the dapper fellow in the 2XU suit, nice avatar!!!

CONGRATULATIONS, AQUATHLETE! I have never done one. (Nor an aquathlon for that matter).

25m is right speedy for a hobbled fellow ... swim is none too shabby either. Proud Manatee you should bee.

Holy fast, gimpy run, Batman!!  Geez, I can't wait to see how your races progress through the season with a non-injured peg and with the knowledge you are acquiring from each prior race.  Each one will surely go smoother and better.  And 52*F sounds pretty chilly to me.  Great job, Darren!

At first I thought, "Oh boy, what a mistake!" Let’s face it, I could barely run half a mile, I had not swum in forever, and my biking skills were not great, to say the least.

My sister warned me about being used as a launch ramp by faster swimmers but much to my surprise I was the one swimming over those in front of me. I went around one woman, then another.
