Total Time = 1h 30m 28s
Overall Rank = 42/374
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 4/42
Pre-race routine:

Had the girls with me, so I got up, ate my oatmeal, drove ~80min to the race, got set up and raced. Got abouta 50m swim in before hand
Event warmup:

Swam maybe 50m. it was choppy and I was getting nervous
Swim
  • 13m 42s
  • 1056 yards
  • 01m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

I got really scared in my mini-warm up. It was very choppy and windy. It was pushing me all over the place and I was inhaling water about every other breath. After getting to the first buoy, I decided to not try and kill the swim, just stay nice and smooth. My navigating was horrible, I was all over the place. I felt pretty relaxed on the inward leg, just keeping a nice steady pace, resigned to a slower time. When I saw my time, I was shocked. Faster than last year, and 1st in AG. I think by not trying to swim fast, I was smoother in the water. That must have made up for my sighting and breathing difficulties.

nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

passed a couple of people running up from thewater. No major issues, but I didn't feel too quick in T1
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 47m 41s
  • 16 miles
  • 20.09 mile/hr
Comments:

Rode a comfortably hard ride leg. Coming out of the water early, I was getting passed by everyone. Realizing my bike is my weakness, I was OK with it, but it can be a bit demoralizing. Kept a steady effort, trying to keep it right on the redline, while keeping something left for the run. Overall, I rode about as well as I could, I just still have NO power. Must keep working on it. It was faster than last year, but still a couple of minutes from my first couple of times racing here.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

went pretty quick. NO issues. Got running shoes on smoothly and was off.
Run
  • 26m 40s
  • 4 miles
  • 06m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Much better than expected. i pushed a bit harder on the bike, expecting a slower bike time. Goal was 29min. hit the first mile in 6:27, and it felt like I was much slower. I assumed the mark was off. I slowed on purpose when I asked another guy if it was right and he thought it was correct. Hit turnaround , having slowed 10sec. 3rd mile is mostly uphill, but stayed strong and passed a bunch of people here. Hit the last mile marker and tried to push it a bit more, and kept a steady effort to the end. Didn't have much left in the tank after the run. Thrilled with the time, too.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

walked around with the girls for a few minutes, rinsed off in the lake, got dressed and drove to Sewanee to see friends

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of bike power

Event comments:

This is the 31st year of the race, and they have it dialed in very well. I was very pleased with my time. I was hoping for 1:33, and was thrilled with my time. Fastest time I've had here in 4 attempts. I thought it was a bad swim ( I was wrong), thought it was a good bike (wrong again), and I was much better on the run than expected. I just have to ride more, more, more!

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
