Who's racing in Jacksonville in a couple weeks? I'm in for the Olympic series, never raced out there before.

Last October's Ameliaman was going to be my first; swim got canceled so I can't speak for that part, but the rest was great - well organized, good support. Bike course is nice and flat, not closed to traffic but that wasn't an issue - plenty of police at intersections waving us through, drivers were courteous. Run is nice, relatively shaded through Fort Clinch.

I'm signed up for the sprints this summer, hoping to upsize one or two to an Oly depending on how my first one goes.

How long do you think the drive will be from Ocala? I'm debating getting a hotel for the first race so I don't risk running late for the first one, or just drive up. Are the hotels in the area reasonable?

Depending on where you are in Ocala, I think it take me about 2.5 hours to get to I-75 from here. I've never actually stayed at the host hotel (seaside amelia inn) but I think it was recently renovated. It's literally right at the start line, on the beach, and the DRC website says there's an $89 rate if you mention the race. There's also a Comfort Suites right at the start line. DRC's facebook page says there's over 400 entrants so I'm not sure about hotel availability. Best value you could always camp out in Fort Clinch.

I'm staying just over the border in Kingsland. It's about 16ish miles away, but that's better than 2.5hrs. I might camp the next time, but I think I'll look into a reservation for Atlantic Coast at the host hotel.

Kingsland is <30 minute drive. Hopefully the winds die down a little by this weekend. Did a 20 mile ride this morning and going south was a bit of a pain. The breeze was a bit offshore at least that makes the ocean a bit calmer. Really looking forward to Saturday. DRC says they have over 400 registered between the sprint and Olympic which would be the biggest I've seen at these races (minus ACT in Oct). See everyone Sat.

Is there a supercool triathlon store I should make sure I hit while in the Jax area? I'm coming up sometime Friday (basically, when I'm done packing) so I'll have some time to sight see as well as get my race stuff.

Unfortunately there isn't really much in the way of large tri shops in the area. Jax beach has a small bike shop called Champion Cycling, small store, they can get you anything but don't have much in the way of inventory. There's also a Trek store in Jax beach and they're usually up at the race in the morning. Those are the only 2 I've been to. There's a couple decent running stores, 1st place sports and Jacksonville running company. The owner of JRC has won pretty much every sprint race held here since I've been doing them.

My advice, from someone who grew up in the Kingsland/St.Marys area, get your entertainment in before getting to the hotel. Not sure which hotel you're staying in, probably right off 95, but there isn't much to do there.

Also if anyone reading this is doing the sprint, please don't drink up all the Bold City in the beer garden before the Oly finishers get done

Couldn't have asked for better weather. Overcast the whole race with little to no winds. Bummed there was no beer garden haha. Best turn out for this race yet. Hopefully the girl that wiped out about mile 9 on the bike is okay. Look forward to the race next month. Maybe we'll run into each other at that one

Sounds like a plan.

I passed the wreck on the bike (I was in the last wave and I'm a slow swimmer). She was in the ambulance and later the ambulance passed me with their emergency lights on. I never heard anything specific about her injuries. Hope she's ok.

I scouted the beach the day before and it was a bit rough. I was kind of wondering what I had gotten myself into. It laid right down overnight and it was perfect that morning. I'm talking up the Atlantic Coast/Ameliaman to my Tri group to make a group trip since there are three distances.

I was in the last wave also (Clyde) but am a pretty strong swimmer. I was 2 people back when she wrecked. Still no idea how it happend. She just went over her bars in a pretty horrific manner. I didn't see anything she could have hit. Looked like she locked up her front brake? Luckly an official was right behind us so she got medical attention quickly.

I did the ACT last year. The swim was cancelled due to surf but the ride/run were fun. The bike goes off the island twice and the run in through our greenway, which is offroad. The offroad portion is much more packed than the run for the HITS Ocala race if they did it. I plan to volunteer at the ACT/AmeliaMan this year. I'm doing Ironman Florida and my coach is dead set against me doing a race that close

I agree, weather was perfect. It didn't get hot until the awards ceremony when the sun came out from behind the clouds. My only point of comparison was last year's Ameliaman/ACT which featured brutal seas and rain/puddles throughout the bike.

And yeah, why no beer garden? I was all excited about the Bold City, kept looking around thinking I'd missed it.

What length of time does your coach recommend between a HIM and an IM? I'm doing IMFL also and was considering doing Atlantic Coast, but was concerned it might be too close to IMFL.

A month. Ideally Augusta but I missed it. The thought is that I'd basically taper a week before ACT then a week after giving up the month of October for training

Hopefully the rains done for the night. Just a PSA: fletcher ave (the road along the beach) drains horribly and a light rain floods the bike lane especially N of the first round about (first/last 3 miles). Might be worth a drive in the am

Fokker were you wearing the top in your avi today at the race? I saw someone I thought may have been you, but am told meeting someone saying "are you the guy from online?" isn't the safest.
