Pre-race routine:

For the record, this is the best-organized event I have ever been a part of anywhere in the world. And this is in Indonesia, where nothing is ever organized, and no matter how well the organizers are organized, there are always so many Third World, Indonesia, and Jakarta-specific factors beyond their control. Yet every single part of this race was perfect. Truly mindblowing. And all for $15.

As for my own pre-race routine ... coffee? Cookie? Honestly, I have no idea ... am at a spot right now where I'm so busy and tired I'm lucky I spelled my name correctly on the registration form (the day before). Had to think about my birthdate, too. Laid out clothes the night before or I might have shown up naked, the way my head is these days.

And yes, that's a timing chip on the shoe.
Event warmup:

Jogged lightly around for 15min before going to race start. This was to be part of a 2:15 long training run--just fun to do a race in the middle of it with lots of marvellous people.

Race marshals setting up barriers and getting going on their bicycles to their route stations.

Rockin' it with the hijab girls. I used one of them as pace booty for the whole race. I told her so after. She thought that was awesome. I think it's awesome that Indonesian women of all persuasions are getting into endurance sports.

Yes, Boston. We remember. We run. We always will.

And forgive me, but those too are also some really nice pace booties.

She's hot, too, although "Ambivalence" is not the name I'd pick for a track team. Am I missing something? Is this some famous thing I'm an idiot for not knowing?

Lined up for the start. That's the sun rising in the distance. What a lovely time of day. We started right on time at 6am. Nothing ever starts on time in Indonesia. I was so impressed.

The blue shirts with yellow sleeves are the really nice race tech shirts (included, of course).

Comments:

By the way, I have no idea what my actual time (1:16 was what was on my watch)/rank/etc. is. It was a fun run in the middle of a long run for me.

And the 10Kers are off! I'm at the back, having fun taking pictures. :)

Quite a pretty course in a planned suburb, quite a few universities (including the one sponsoring the run).

Mountains in the distance, and Indonesia's rich, red, so red earth. Every time I look at it, I remember that my father is laid to rest in it, and that is exactly as it should be.

Course was open to traffic on one side, but it was very light. This guy seemed to have fun cycling next to us ... his shirt: "WE WILL NEVER STOP AND NEVER GIVE UP" and "AGAINTS NARCOTICS" (yes, with the misspelling). Indeed.

I have no idea what this is, but it is ENORMOUS, hideous, tacky, and therefore so picture-worthy. I don't think it's finished or occupied yet--I hope they fly lots of really awful flags from the turrets. :)

Oh look! The finish line! That came up fast--okay, well, I mean, for me, and because it was such a pleasant run. :) I really like the separate, clearly marked chutes for 5K and 10K. That's the university in the background.

Post race
Warm down:

Gentle trot for another 45min or so. Went back out on the course and ran in with other racers who were struggling (believe me, if you're coming in slower than me, you are struggling). It was fun. Paused to take pictures of pretty flowers and such (inspired by NyNy, or jmkizer here on BT--she's always posting gorgeous botanical pics on her FB page, with the scientific names). I have no idea what these are. Purple-ous bloomeous!

This is Reza Puspo, the man, the myth, the legend, the leader of Indonesia's running revolution (there were FOUR, count 'em, FOUR races on that weekend--he was the organizer/RD for this one. How the hell do you put on a perfect race in Indonesia?!) Also a beloved piglet of mine (well, of course! ;) ) And an accomplished triathlete, too! He'll be doing IM Melbourne in March!

In addition to plenteous water, Pocari Sweat, and all the actually ripe bananas you could want (for free!), there were also yummy things on sale, cheap. I got a scrumptious glass of ice-cold, freshly-pressed sugarcane juice for 50 cents.

Happy finisher!

Just some fun cameos from around the race site ...
Hands-free cellular, Indonesian-style!

Indonesians can and will sleep anywhere. We take naps very seriously.

Event comments:

Ooh, pretty pretty medal on a nice wide striped ribbon. How do they do all this shyte for $15?

Bag check--another great amenity of this race.

There were multiple boards like these everywhere--very clear route maps, event schedule, and of course ... cute guys. :)

So to recap--super easy online race rego, fast organized packet pickup in a central location the day before, super-clear online instructions on race location, course, and anything else you'd want to know (including an FAQ that puts Ironman info to shame), nice tech tee and actual usable cloth race bag (enviro friendly!), not that this pertains to me but VERY generous cash prizes in all categories and same for male and female, very professional race area and expo, chip timing, bag check, very clearly marked and staffed course, plenty of Pocari and water stations with volunteers (all race staff cheered us on like we were in the Olympic finals), fark they even had a medic tent, bananas, Swiss precision regarding execution and punctuality. I'm probably missing a bunch of stuff, but man ... BEST ORGANIZED RACE EVER. Ever ever ever. All other races could and should take some serious note. THIS is how you do a race. And all this for a local 5K/10K, cheap cheap price!!! Lovelovelove!

Sounds like a great race and from your wonderful pics looks to be very beautiful, almost as beautiful as your smile!  It was so good to see lots of Yanti smiles in those scenes.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had weight issues. I remember standing on the scale as a child weighing 60 pounds and feeling fat. My family dealt with stress by eating.
