Subject: RE: 50 mile training plan. I would not recommend Pftiz marathon plans for 50-miler training, unless you've raced long ultras before and plan on being very competitive. The Pfitz plans I've used include a lot of VO2 Max, Lactate Threashold, and Tempo Work. While these plans have a lot of mileage, they're designed to help you optimize your marathon performance.
I'd suggest doing a web search for 50-mile training plans and comparing them. Most 50-mile specific plans will probably be similar to or fewer miles than the Pfitz plan you referenced, but will focus on at least one (and quite often two ) long run per week. Hal Higdon has a free plan on his site you can take a look at. When his mileage gets up to 70+, his plan calls for 4-5 hours on Saturday and 3-4 hours on Sunday....both usually done at very low intensity.
I'd suggest a web search for 50-mile plans, comparing them, and choosing one that fits your lifestyle and time you have available for training the best. |
