Pre-race routine:

Worked both Friday and Saturday night. Only had 4 hours sleep on Friday night before work. Got home at 03:30 am on Saturday morning and awoke back up at 07:30 am to get ready for the race.

Had a few cups of coffee and some water, couldn't face any breakfast, felt a bit sickly (probably because I was over tired).

Registration was after 0800 hrs and the latest you could get in the race pen was 0945 hrs. I left it a little late because the event is only 8 mile away from my house. At around 0830 hrs I jogged/walked over to the nearest train station, my left glute has been really tight lately, and I was using this time to try and "wake it up". After arriving at the station, I checked the time table only to discover that trains don't run on Sunday until 0930 am. DOH! A quick panic call to my wife, but no answer. Try again, still no answer. Quick decision to run the 1.4 km back to my house to get the bike.

Got back to the house. Went in quickly to refill my water bottle, grabbed my motorbike keys and helmet, and off I go at 90+ mph.

Got as close to the event as I could and jogged the rest of the distance in. On arriving, I dropped off my bag at the baggage check in and milled about for a bit.

There was a fair amount of other activities going on, like Bokawa(?) aerobics, blind soccer, spin cycles etc There was a real buzz about the place, if I wasn't soooooo tired and grumpy I think I would have started enjoying myself :)
Event warmup:

About 5 minutes before we were to be herded into the corral, I went for a little jog with some pick ups in. Nothing too strenuous, as I'd already been for 3 jogs that morning :\

Comments:

Haven't been running a lot recently because of foot injury, so I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, performance wise. To me, this wasn't meant to be a race, but more a participation event, with it being my home town's inaugural 10 km.

I'm not going to lie, I found this run hard. Although the sun was in, it was still humid. As I said, I haven't really been training since I hurt my foot, and have lost my mojo a bit.

Foot didn't feel too bad. And the re was a fair few descents involved that is where I feel the pain. But it was manageable today.

Wasn't feeling too bad for the first 4-5 km. I new I was going too fast, but I found it difficult to pace with so many people around me, but I just plodded on. At about 5km mark, there was a water station. This is the point where the wheels started falling off. I had gone out too fast and reached this point at about 23:09, only 2 seconds off my 5 km PB. There was a fair amount of descent in the first half of the course, so I wasn't too worried about it.

What can I say about the rest? Basically it was a dig in and hang on, and a little bit of sick at the end. No smiley faces when crossing the line from me, I left that at the 5 km point.

At the end of the day, this was my first 10 km race, and a new PB by 57 seconds, so can't grumble :)
What would you do differently?:

Uhhh.....Sleep, nutrition, hydration, pacing........take your pick. :)
Post race
Warm down:

Walked the long way back to the bike around the Castle and moat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injury, lack of training, lack of sleep blah, blah, blah.

Event comments:

Really well organised race. Nice gym bag containing a medal, a sports drink bottle, some gels and flapjacks as a goodie bag. No tech shirt :(

Wow. Very well done considering the challenges you faced. Your pace really didn't drop much in the second half so your "hanging on" is still pretty darn good!

I don't know how you do these races on such sleep as you get!  I'd be a walking zombie Beeeeyotch Surprised Pretty cool that you got to run in the inaugural...and through countryside near that castle??? Gorgeous! And I must say, you're a pretty quick "plodder". Laughing

Holy moly!  On 4 hours of sleep you kill a 10K with a bum leg.

Wow - if that's your "plodder" pace with a bum foot and losing your mojo... I want to know how to become a plodder!

Great job with the race on so little sleep and all the other snafus of the morning.  It also looks like a beautiful venue!

Congrats!!

Great job! By flapjacks do you mean pancakes? Or ...?

Meh, I think all the other stuff you got (assuming they were pancakes) is way cooler than a tech shirt.

Flapjacks are a kind of chewy muesli bar. http://britishfood.about.com/od/eorecipes/r/flapjack.htm

And I guess the goodies were good, considering it was only about 16 bucks to enter.

Looking at the splits, I think you're correct. Slowed down on marker 6 and 7, but then picked it up a bit toward the end. I think I was having trouble with my gut after taking on water at the 5 km mark.

I have to admit, from the pics, it does look like this is in the countryside, but its not. The castle is smack bang in the centre of town, and the run was around the surrounding streets past some rough housing estates to finish at the castle. Still fun though.
