Subject: I'm a triathlete!

Well, my 1st tri was today so I'm finally a triathlete!  It was a spint.  After a 2hr rain delay (torrential early AM rains), we hit the lake.  I was pretty comfortable in the swim.  It was a little choppy, but nothing horrible.  The roads were crappy for the ride with a headwind for the 2nd half (exact same for everyone, I know).  I did well on the run. A little slow in T1 because I didn't try to rush and ok in T2.

The biggest thing I learned from today is that I'm a terrible cyclist.  Holy crap!!!  My swim and run were 11th and 10th in my age group, but I gave up 10+ minutes to nearly everyone in the bike.  Very pleased with my S/R times, equally displeased with the bike split.

It was enjoyable.  I never got nervous, which made me nervous (if that makes sense).  I was more excited than anything.  Normally I wouldn't do this one again because the roads were in such bad shape, but I need to try to improve on it so I'll probably do it again next year.  My next tri is an Oly at the end of August.  Hopefully I can up my cycling speed in the next month+.

They taught you the secret handshake, right? Congrats, but watch it, this can be habit forming.

I still remember the feeling of accomplishment after crossing the finish line of my first tri. My killer leg was the run. I did ok on the swim, great on the bike and horrendous on the run. Just gave me something to work on- which I'm still doing three years later-lol.

Great accomplishment. Congrats.

Congratulations!  Well done.

I remember my first triathlon as being the single biggest learning experience I've had in the sport.

Good luck with your training and your upcoming race.

Nice! Congrats on getting the first one done. I just did my first last Sunday. That's funny what you mention about the bike. I felt like during the race that the bike was my best leg and that the run was my worst. It was actually opposite when I saw the results. I guess there is more biking in our future!

Thanks everyone.  You have all helped me a lot in this first 7 weeks.  Whether it be answers to direct questions or just learning by lurking, I've gotten a lot from this site.  I think I'm hooked (on tri and BT).

Since this was my 'B' race and I usually bike Sat and Sun, I went for a ride today.  While my intent was to take it a little easier, I ended up going for an hour in the upper end of my Z2.  I had also intended to stick to the flats but ended up with some fairly long climbs.  I'm too competitive!  I guess that's why this may be a good sport for me...  Even if no one's around, I can always compete with myself.  The timing worked out right for this race in that starting tomorrow is a recovery week.  I plan to kick it in the a$$ again starting next Monday!

Congrats! Did it happen to be the Mpls tri? Or was there another race this weekend delayed by torrential rain?

It was indeed the Mpls tri.  I sure hope there were no others that dealt with that monsoon!

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
