Total Time = 1h 34m 30s
Overall Rank = 191/346
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 10/16
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:20. 4 egg whites, WW toast, OJ. Race was only 20 minutes away and I did the pre-packet pickup the day before
Event warmup:

Being big sucks. My bike seat is too high to rest on the rack so it's just kind of floating there, leaning. Kept getting knocked over so I had to squeeze my bag in there to prop it up. Besides that went for a swim, 100 yards maybe, just went out and got a feel for the water. Nice and warm.
Swim
  • 21m 19s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Kind of stuck towards the back and just went at my own pace. I think I sighted pretty well as I was right on the buoys at all 3 turns. I just swim slow as shit. I didn't do it with any urgency, just kind of went. When there was someone near me or kicking me I would turn it on and be gone, but besides that I just swam easy.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. I've neglected the swim so much lately. Idiot. Oh, and race. I didn't feel winded or anything, I'm just slow.
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Between being in the 2nd to last wave and my bike teetering to begin with, it was fully knocked over by the time I got into transition. Tried my best to pick up everything and go.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out a way to rack my bike on a normal rack.
Bike
  • 39m 55s
  • 12.3 miles
  • 18.61 mile/hr
Comments:

I've ridden about half the course before because I lived near there. The half I didn't ride was the tough half. Some good sized hills and actually saw a few people fall over going up them because they got stuck in the wrong gear. I just didn't bring it on the bike. Way under trained, not ready for the hills, just not ready for anything.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. No reason I can't get more out of my rides.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

T2 was coming up a hill and then a corner, so I never had a chance to get my feet on top of my shoes, so I just unclipped and ran in my bike shoes. That never goes well. Oh well, by that time I was just along for the ride
What would you do differently?:

Remember to unclip at the right time, although it was tough as there was maybe 200 feet of straight ride trying to navigate runners and bikers before you get to the dismount line. Oh well.
Run
  • 30m 18s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 09m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty much disgusting. My legs felt like crap. The first half was all gradual up hill, second half was coming back down. I just couldn't move. I did see my wife and son on the way back down and that cheered me up a bit so I finished strong, but besides that it was just ugly the whole way.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Common theme? Yes. I haven't ran because of my hip, although it does feel better now.
Post race
Warm down:

Really nothing good. Had a water bottle and a bower par that I spit out because it was the wrong flavor. Kind of disappointed in the post race festivities..

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training. Again, no excuses, but I didn't train enough, and that's on me. It was too easy to relax over the 4th and not HTFU up and train like I should have. I wish I could take something positive away from the race but I really can't. I'm just bummed at my whole approach towards the race; my training, mental prep, everything. I coasted too much. I'm probably never going to be a FOP guy, not anytime soon, I just want to compete to what I'm capable of and this race was not it. I have to think a while of how I want to approach what comes next.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

We did really well with the beers, which will explain my reluctance to get out of bed on Saturday morning.
