What were the distances on the swim and bike? Those change from race to race.

If you are happy with your time, then that's all that matters.

What are the distances? There are a variety of "sprint" -type races. Is this your first race? Or are you trying to improve on a previous race? Hard to comment without more information on your situation...

Is this a question about a goal time or a result?

And as others have said the distances aren't standard in a sprint so that matters too.

Even so- assuming this is your current result, questions like this without context baffle me- is this a "good" result compared to what? What you did last year? For a first tri? Depending on your athletic background and training it could be either an amazing accomplishment or a very disappointing result. Winners of competiive sprint tris will be around an hour, and the slowest people over two hours- but either of those times and anything in between can be great results.

I would say that's fine for your first event. Is your run really that weak, or did you just burn out early?

Official sprint is supposed to be 750m/20k/5k but in practicality does vary. Try finding a perfect loop of 5k, 6.6k or 10 or an out and back with a perfectly safe turn around at 10k.

swim seems slow, bike was good and either you were lacking overall endurance or your run is a work in progress. Do you have a competitive background in any of the 3 sports? Not a bad first time out but I bet sub 1:30 is not out of reach for you.

Still hard to say without details of your background, but if you're happy with it then it's a good result. Congratulations on your first race-- are you hooked now?

To compare: My first sprint in May was almost the same in the swim, a little slower in the bike, but faster in the run. The swim was the same distance in a pool-- I know I'm a slower than average swimmer, but at least I can do it. I come from a running background but still have work to do there post-injury. I don't do a lot of cycling-- only "just enough". Next sprint is Sunday and I hope to improve a bit.

That was my time for my sprint tri this past Sunday. I dont think it was too bad, it was my first tri in over 8 years.

    9:33 swim supposedly 400M
    44:00 bike 20Km
    42:00 run 5K

That time put me in the back of the pack. I do agree that the swim is a bit long. Bike would be about an 18MPH pace and your run was just under 12min/mile. Most of the age groupers I saw above me were running 10min/miles if that helps.

the swim was 750 meters, i did wait for everyone to go before i started swimming. i was nervous about the massive amount of people swimming at the same time. running has always been my weakness, i cant seem to get my time down. now that being said, i need to run more often but i really dont enjoy it.

    Since you asked.......it's slow.

However, like others have said, who cares?  It's your first race so it's a helluva lot faster than sitting still doing nothing.  You've got some major time to drop on the swim and the run, so that's a good thing.

If you had a great time and want to do more then it's a win for you.....and as you will learn if you haven't already, that's all that counts to all but a very tiny percentage of people who do triathlon.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

With a hectic schedule and the desire to throw in other forms of exercise, I went from following one of the training programs to doing my own. Would it be better to follow a training plan?

Should I have time goals for the first sprint? Should I just finish the race at a reasonable pace? I'm not sure how to approach this.
