You hear "crit" quite a bit on here as well. I believe it's short for Criterium style road race (bike), but the bike guys can clarify.

ETA- I believe Comet (Haley) has the copyright on "Jockstrap". She get's credit for it when it ends up in Websters. Tongue out

Ah.  OK.  I knew PB, but was completely stumped on PR.  A little slow on the uptake.  Thanks

Thanks to Rob I now know what a MOP is - not sure if it's really a term but middle of pack vs. BOP or FOP

what about half mary or whatever... meaning 1/2 iron man or marathon (I'm not sure).

may i add mine to represent me that is not even close to the back of the pack...WTFP: Where the f*** is the pack?!

So far as I know, I made this one up from watching tri starts:

"carp start" -

open water swim start (as opposed to the occasional pool swims in sprint tris)

Transition run gets used a lot too, but I don't understand how that is diffferent from a bike/run brick.

I don't know the answer to that either, so I'm hoping someone will step in.

Anything that came up here that wasn't answered and I don't know, I'll do research. I'll also be adding some that haven't been suggested. I'm hoping we'll have a pretty extensive list for our first edition BT.com glossary!

I am SO sorry for the delay. I've been out of town dealing with a major family emergency since the morning of August 5th and I just haven't had time to swim, bike, run, or compile! Stay tuned. I should have some downtime this week as things start to mellow out.

From the cycling world:

Fred - anyone who dresses up in the full kit of a professional racing team, and even has the matching $6000+ bike to go with it and rides maybe once a week at 12 mph ......

Kit - collection of cycling clothing (jersey, shorts, gloves, helmet)

To encourage new swimmers...

Speedo:
1) The swimsuit manufacturing company. They manufacture JAMMERS (spandex swim shorts), variations of full body suits, and of course, the briefs.
2) A somewhat derrogatory term to describe all tight underwear-like brief swimsuits.

"he is wearing a speedo" usually refers to #2, while "I bought a speedo fastskin" refers to #1

What is DNR???

Thanks!!!

Rabbit = the guy or gal that you pick out of the crowd before your swim start that you will chase and try to pass on your way to the finish ..  Like in dog racing.

It is the total distance of a 1/2 Ironman

1.2 + 56 + 13.1 = 70.3

I was just searching through the list looking for this term and was going to add it if it wasn't here!  I wasn't sure if anyone else actually used it.  I worked for a classic Fred once, Mike Copeland, CEO of Corel.  He had matching $6000 his and hers Litespeed bikes that he and his wife rode twice a year in full regalia.  Anyone know the origin of the term?

Taco: a bent wheel that looks like the #2 combo from Taco Bell.

Snakebite: two itty bitty holes in a tube because the rider was an idiot for underinflating their tire and/or using a screwdriver to set the tire bead.

Red Pill: Another name for coca cola.

Wrench: The nickname of the shop monkey at your LBS

Rubber Melt Special: This is what happens when you put your bike on a trunk carrier and the wheel right behind the exhaust.

I heard the term once as a Fred tatoo, mountain biking.   The mark that was left on your right calf from a greasey chain ring.   I'm thinking it has something to do with Fred Flintstone.

The chainring tat aka Cat 5 tat, sign of ubernewbie or ulta hardcore. The wise will have the ring tatooed on their calf.

fred
1) n. a person who spends a lot of money on his bike and clothing, but still can't ride. "What a fred -- too much Lycra and titanium and not enough skill." Synonym for poser. Occasionally called a "barney".
2) n. a person who has a mishmash of old gear, does't care at all about technology or fashion, didn't race or follow racing, etc. Often identified by chainring marks on white calf socks. Used by "serious" roadies to disparage utility cyclists and touring riders, especially after these totally unfashionable "freds" drop the "serious" roadies on hills because the "serious" guys were really posers. This term is from road touring and, according to popular myth, "Fred" was a well-known grumpy old touring rider, who really was named Fred.
