Folks, Given this is BeginnerTriathlete.com, I figured it would be really nice to do an article that is a glossary of terms. The problem is, I'm not a novice, but I'm still a beginner and I can't do this alone!! Please reach into your brain cells and share with me some key terms, acronyms or idioms that we use in the sport of triathlon or just here in BT.com. I remember a thread where someone asked "what is DNF and DNS". I think we all take terms like that for granted plus there are loads of terms that I don't know, yet, and I'd love a glossary to go to! Remember all three sports and the slang!

So, I'll keep this thread running for a few days/week, I'll compile an article to post and as long as I'm around, I'll update the editions. Just call me Mirriam Webster. Or not. Actually, yeah, don't.

Thanks to Rob I now know what a MOP is - not sure if it's really a term but middle of pack vs. BOP or FOP

what about half mary or whatever... meaning 1/2 iron man or marathon (I'm not sure).

in my experience, DFL = dead fricking last

split is your time for a portion of your race or workout. For instance, your mile splits in a 5k are your times for each individual mile.

i've seen LT used around here, and I think it's lactate threshold. At least that's what it meant when I was a more serious runner -- the pace at which you can go w/o building up lactic acid.

this is a great idea, btw!

Great tip, I'll look for those threads and include it.

I'm looking for terms like this that are technical as well as the "easy" terms like DNF. I'll do research on the side with my books (I read about training more than I actually train) and other sites so we should have something pretty comprehensive this time next week.

Brick = joining two workouts ( bike/run) together
LSD = long slow distance
Negative split = finish the second half of a workout/race faster than the first half
T1,T2 = transition 1 change area between swim and bike, transition 2 between bike and run

IM- Ironman of course, as well as individual medley in swimming (equal distances of 4 strokes, usually between 100 and 400 yards- butterfly, backstroke, breast stroke and then any stroke but the first three (I was on the swim team in high school so I only heard that phrase about 100 times or so) which for most people will be freestyle.

LBS is local bike shop
RPE
General stuff like intervals, strides, etc.
There are people who use different HR zones like MAF, etc. (I've seen a few on the site)
Define the Triathlon distances like Sprint (obviously varies), Olympic, HIM, and IM
ATP (Annual Training Plan)
Duathlon, aquathon
OWS
aerobic/anerobic (I'm sure I spelled that wrong)
RHR/MHR/AHR

Geez, this list could go on and on!  GREAT idea, Mottyl!  If I think of more I'll post again...those are just off the top of my head in five minutes.

First tri season. Since swim interval call outs were a bit confusing to me at first, I thought others would benefit from one:

"4x75 at 1:30 on 1:45" means to swim 4 intervals of 75 yd/meter lengths (which is usually 3 lengths of a lap pool) within 1 minute:30 sec, with a 15 second rest between each. Or, swim 75 yd/m every 1 minute, 45 seconds.

So far, this is shaping up nicely!!! I was going to put it together this weekend, but I got a fiscal year end project so no promises. We'll leave it here for a while longer, especially since it just went out in the newsletter today.
