Subject: Judge rules infants name to be changed!

What's in a name anyways?

 http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/08/11/tenn-judge-changes-infant-name-from-messiah-says-it-could-put-him-at-odds-with/?test=latestnews#ixzz2brpnc4fF

So the courts did this kid a favor by requiring the parents to change his name, but should that judge have the power to do this?

This was surprising to me:

"Messiah was No. 4 among the fastest-rising baby names in 2012, according to the Social Security Administration's annual list of popular baby names."

Living in Memphis, I have heard, seen and misspelled plenty of names, but while I agree that this is not a great name for a child, I also think parents have the choice to name their kids whatever they want.

(And I have kids, three of them, so I get an opinion on this)

My fiancee works with a gentleman named Messiah. Who also happens to be African American. He is in their IT department and is one of the most popular employees in the company.

Sad that a judge would take these steps.

makes me wonder what they legal basis of his decision was....and how it ended up in the courts....

I guess, it could be argued that it is an honorific term and thus not suitable - kinda like Rabbi, Reverend etc...but not sure

As a pretty religious person I have no issues whatsoever with somebody being named Messiah.  I don't necessarily agree with naming my kid that, but I can say that about a lot of names these days.  lol

It won't stand up in court, so I predict it will be overturned.

"A judge in Tennessee changed a 7-month-old boy's name to Martin from Messiah, saying the religious name was earned by one person and 'that one person is Jesus Christ.'"

Meanwhile, there are a ton of people walking around named "Jesus". I wonder how she feels about that.

She'd have to be an idiot not to know that it will be overturned. She's doing it for publicity and/or to make a statement.

If I have another kid, I'm naming him "President".

I believe the judge overstepped her bounds--especially with her comment about Christ "earning" the title.

I kind of like the name. Could a judge ban the name Jesus or Muhammad on religious grounds?

Ugh what a dumb name. I know someone named Kent Clark (no joke) and he gets made fun of all the time. Bruce Wayne is a much more under-the-radar name.

There is a Richard Hertz where I work. I have to stifle a laugh every time I hear his name. Very immature and unprofessional on my part...

Yep. We had a Mike Hunt in high school. He was pretty darned tough. But then you'd have to be with that name, I guess.

My sisters a teacher and she had a kid in her kindergarten class named Guy, but his mom pronounced it "Gooey". Seems she picked the name because she liked the way it looked but never really knew how to pronounce it correctly.

No lie, I had a teacher in middle school with that name. Can you imagine what that must have been like with 600 adolescent males?
Oh wait, I'm 51 and it's still funny...

A coworker went to school in the 70's with a girl named Fonda Dicks.  I didn't believe him until I googled her.  She was a standout basketball player in Iowa, and her name is in the Iowa highschool record books.  I can only assume she hates her parents.

I remember when I was on my last ship in the Navy (2008 time frame) - we used to get messages with the listing of new commanding officers on ships - it was rank/last name only - but one of them showed up and it was CDR Dicks was relieved by a CDR Dykes...

These are freaking awesome! I love people.

I know a boy named ESPN. Pronounced "espen" which is not that unusual, but spelled like the sports network (on purpose).
