5th Metatarsal. A quick Google Images search tells me the pain is coming from exactly where that bone ends in my foot.

I was an hour in to a 1.5 hour run this morning and that spot starts hurting almost instantly. It's never hurt before and it's throbbing now.

What is protocol for this? Can you sprain that spot? It definitely does not feel broken, but I know it's not a good thing

My first HIM is in 5 weeks!!! Arrgghhh!!

How do you know it's not a stress fracture?  Can you hop up and down on that foot?

I don't.

I guess what I am trying to ask is, if there is a pain there, is there another "ailment" that it could be that is not a stress fracture? For instance, can you "sprain" it, bruise it, etc..?

If it's the end closest to your ankle and still painful in a couple of days go see an orthopod and get it checked out. Could be a Jones' Fracture. I saw one from a dude in his 30's jumping up and down at a rock concert. Needs close follow up. In the mean time RICE it

I usually have at least one workout per day, sometimes two or three, but I spend about all in-between time eating. I am not gaining weight, but I am not losing weight either. Should I be concerned?

Besides the obvious rest and strengthening/PT around the ankles, what can I do to further find the root cause and correct it? Also, what are doctors’ stances on active release?

Is there anything that I can do to lessen the chances of stress fractures. I have had no luck with the doctors I have seen. Some have advised orthotics, some say there is nothing that can be done.

Early diagnosis and proper care from a sports medicine trained physician are essential for good management of a stress fracture. This will help avoid complications in the future.
