Mont-Tremblant, Quebec
Canada
World Triathlon Corporation
78F / 26C
Sunny
Total Time = 13h 26m 6s
Overall Rank = 1346/
Age Group = F40-44
Age Group Rank = 45/110
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4am - breakfast of oatmeal and bananas. Got dressed - went over special needs bags one more time and then headed down to transition around 5:20am. Pumped tires, dropped off Special needs and headed to beach. Little cold standing around as I was in the last wave.
Swim
  • 1h 14m 42s
  • 4156 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was in the final wave. First 200 had a lot of contact. Took an elbow to the goggles and needed to stop to re-adjust. Turned out to be a good thing as it left me with mostly open water till the turnaround.
Lots of contact with all previous waves starting around the turnaround..lots of contact- swam over more people than I can count. Choppier than expected, but OK. Little confusion - saw swimmers on both sides of the buoys coming back in.
Transition 1
  • 09m 14s
Comments:

Used the strippers then gently run to T! - its about 400m and I wasn't' going to wear my self out getting there.
Bike
  • 6h 43m 52s
  • 111.85 miles
  • 16.62 mile/hr
Comments:

First loop went really well - kept my legs spinning and loose. The big climbs at the end felt really easy. Felt good going into the second lap but the wind really picked up on 117 and that really started to drain me - especially on the way back. Switched to gels/perform around mile 40 as my stomach wasn't feeling great - think I swallowed a lot of air and water in the swim. Around mile 80 started mentally dragging but got it together enough for the climbing at the end. Best section was definitely going through the main town - tons of people cheering - really gets your energy going.
What would you do differently?:

Not much - glad I tried different nutritional plans before race as solids just were not working for me that day.
Transition 2
  • 06m 5s
Comments:

Stopped at port-potty then got run gear on quickly. Saw my family as I was leaving and stopped for hugs and kissed from the kids.
Run
  • 5h 12m 13s
  • 26.22 miles
  • 11m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Struggled the first 3 miles of the run with stomach issues - not sure gas or bloating - had a hard time taking a deep breath, but felt better with each aid station - 1 cup of water 1 cup of Perform. Took in to gel and salt tabs a mile 2 and by mile 3 felt like I was hitting my stride. Loved the gravel path - really easy on the legs/feet. Aid stations were amazing - tons of volunteers. Around mile 12 my left achilles started tightening. Amazing run through the town - was sure Chrissie Wellington or Macca was behind me with the amount of cheering ! Really overwhelming experience. Then my left calf seized up and I tried stretching but felt something "pop". Walked the next mile then ran/walked/hobbled to the turnaround at mile 6. Wanted to keep running but right calf started feeling tight and did not want to risk injury and not finishing this close. Made the very tough decision to walk (I was running on the inside) and power walked the heck out of the last 7 miles. Nutrition got messed up took coke and pretzels for 2 miles then just a little water here and there..stomach was not feeling great - sucked it up enough for the final run through the village to finish line - ran right past family - ran back to give them hugs and then crossed the finish line
What would you do differently?:

Calf compressors and socks in special needs bag.
Post race
Warm down:

Volunteers could not have been more wonderful at finish line. Escorted me to get medal, t-shirt, hat, etc... Was feeling a bit woozy so got some water, coke, watermelon and 5 chocolate chip cookies. Sat down for a bit but was worried I'd pass out so borrowed a cell phone and left a message for my husband to meet me at the hotel room. My head wanted beer and poutine, but my stomach just wouldn't let me. Had some coconut water, beer and a pop tart back at the room and a very long bath.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Definitely my calves which have never been an issue.

Event comments:

First IM but what an amazing venue. Highly recommend Tremblant - course is great- roads are smooth and closed to traffic, volunteers were plentiful. The village itself was great for food - lots of healthy choices. Tons of activities for the kids - mine are already asking when we're going back. An amazing first IM experience.

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

If a heart patient can do these things, then so can those of you who haven't been split open like a fish and sewn back together.
