Subject: Choosing an early summer Half-IM in Northeast/Midatlantic
I just finished my 2nd IM Canada (near my parents' house) and want to schedule a Half for next year to anchor my season (no IM for 2014). I've done Mooseman and Syracuse as WTC races. I'm not really interested in Syracuse again and that weekend isn't really available (bummer since the 70.3 at Mont Tremblant would have been awesome).

I'm debating between the following 3 races:

Rev3s Quassy race on June 1st:
http://rev3tri.com/quassy/quassy-news/

Patriot Half on June 14th:
http://www.sunmultisportevents.com/Patriot_Half.htm

and Black Bear Tri on 1st:
http://www.cgiracing.com/blackbeartri/Home.aspx

I'm not interested in the Timberman race because I really only would like to swim in a lake, no rivers or salt water for me. But am I missing any other races in the timeframe (a little earlier is also fine)?

Any recommendations? Especially having come from WTC races with lots of support, I just want to know if I'm getting in to a race where I should be carrying more of my own stuff. These are all reasonable drives from Philly and these weekends would work the best. I've also done some hilly races both on the ride and the run, so as long as I know, I'll be fine.

Thanks in advance.

would you be adverse to traveling to the VA area? Set-up Events has the Kinetic Half in mid May in Spotsylvania (not far from DC). They do a really good job with set-up/running of the events - I've done 4 with them so far this year, plus a couple in previous years

they don't have the date for 2014 posted yet (probably around October-ish) - but here is the 2013 link - http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_detail&eventI...

Black Bear is a good race. No issue with support there. And I have not done Quassy, but have heard only good things. Both are reasonably challenging courses. If you are up for a challenge, you could also consider HarryMan (http://www.genesisadventures.com/v4/main.php?center=harrymantri). And, if you are not opposed to considering a duathlon, I can't recommend American Zofingen (http://www.cm2promotions.com/american-zofingen#!__american-zofingen) highly enough. The G. Chris Gleason Memorial distance race is comparable to a tough half. The Long Course is closer to an IM.

I don't think you mean Timberman... That is most definitely in a lake...in August. You probably mean Eagleman. anyway...

How about HITS North Country - Jun 21/22 - upstate NY. All distances. HITS is smaller - but thought they did a good job at Hunter Mt last year.

The Musselman in Geneva, NY is a great race. Very well supported and Jeff Henderson, the RD, and his team does a great job. It's usually held in July - I think this year it was 3 weeks after Syracuse 70.3. You should definitely look into it!

Saw Josh Beck's times at Black Bear and strangely enough, the appeal of that race is going up.

Thanks for these ideas. If anyone else has feedback on the few I originally mentioned, I think those dates/venues/races still work the best for me.

runnerx - You are right. I was thinking of Eagleman.

I bet that Harryman race is hard. I've race road bikes there before. I'm not sure I'd be excited about all of those laps.

Most people believe that running barefoot is dangerous. Certainly, depending upon the surface, they would be correct. However, there is some suggestion that running barefoot may reduce injuries.
