Subject: What is the swimming equivalent of a marathon?
Is it 2.4 miles, or longer?

No real "equivalent" but I would say closer to 10K OWS.

It used to be a 10k swim, but I'd say that a 5k swim is more of an accomplishment than a marathon run.

At world championships they swim 5k, 10k and 25k. On the FINA circuit the longest race is 88km top men are 9:39, ladies come in 10 min later, its down a river too.

Well 26.2 miles is 26.2 miles, so how about 26.2 miles?

Or based on equivalent times....let's see....3 miles takes me close to 40 minutes when running, 40 minutes in the pool is a mile...so 12 miles then.
But factoring in getting slower over a longer run...maybe 15 miles? That 25k swim guess is starting to work for my estimates too!

5k swim is more of an accomplishment then a marathon? Most people talk about how short the swim is in an IM and it is 3.8k, I would say 10k at least. Going off times it would be close.

They take about the same amount of time to complete. But having done two 10k swims this summer, the HUGE difference is that there is no walking during a swim. They're a both tough, in their own unique ways.

Maybe if you can't swim!

I'm not even a FOP swimmer, and I can bang out 5k in a typical longer-yardage workout, day in day out.

26.2 miles run though is wayyyyy harder.

I'd say 10k swim is closer.

Sounds like 10k is the number. When you do a 10k swim, do you ever take a brake and just elementary backstroke for a couple of minutes? or is it one long uninterrupted slog?

I did a couple short sessions of back stroke to keep my shoulders loose. I was accompanied by a kayaker, so I would tread water/breast stroke while I was handed my water and fuel bottles.

Not in a pool! Huge difference, and you know THAT!

How many 10k OWS are offered in the US? How many marathons?

How many peeps finished a running marathon last year? How many finished a 5k swim or longer?

YAZ, I'll see you at the Chesapeake Bay Swim next year. Then tell me. My most proud accomplishment, even over my IM is completing the CBS MOP. Yes, on a triathlon forum, I said that a 4.4 Mile Open Water Swim (which took me just over 2 hours) makes me more proud than my 8 marathons, 3 half IMs & one full.

If you go by how many people finished marathons vs how many people finished open water swimming events, you might come to the conclusion that 1K or 2K swim were the equivalent to a marathon.

I don't think those metrics are relevant, nor are what one would personally find more challenging. I'd find a 100K bike ride more challenging than marathon, but that doesn't make them equivalent.

It's obviously hard to compare the two sports-- long distance events aren't nearly as popular in swimming as they are in running-- but if you go by FINA definition, the "marathon" swim is 10K. Elite swim racers finish a 10K swim in similar times as elite runners' times in marathons. I'd say for those reasons it's the closest equivalent.

excuse me... but 5,000m is a typical swim workout for any competitive swimmer.  And OWS isn't really much harder (unless it's really rough).  Maybe 10K?

and before anyone asks.  cycling a century... even a pretty hilly one- is easier than a marathon.

Have to disagree with you on this one. you're really just comparing the popularity of the sports, OWS is just not as common as running events. I did the bay swim as well (1:47) and wouldn't put it anywhere close to a marathon. It was hard, no doubt. I came in 22 out of the 650+ people and I struggled through the currents toward the end. I would never say it was easy and its an awesome event, but its far from a marathon.

I would even consider a 10k too short to compare to a marathon. Time wise I'd put the equalivant up around 8-10 miles

It's with a very strong current though

My coach has won this race three times - he's also an IM finisher at a pro level - he would probably say the Channel crossing is the equivalent of a marathon.  And he's done a double crossing and some.  But swimming is his thing no doubt he doesn't find that stuff as daunting as running 26miles.

Current or no current I could not swim 28.5miles
