Sadly a buddy of mine was racing in the Half in Ottawa today and his bike was STOLEN from transition... bad mark for the race, sad day for him and for any other triathletes who assume we are safe leaving our shoes, shades, bikes and wetsuits at Transition during our race...

If you know anyone who was at the race or in Ottawa who might have a clue let him know Twitter: @chaimdog.

"My #Cervelo P2 #bike with #Zipp wheels was accidentally taken from today's @SomersaultEvent in #Ottawa! Please RT this so I can get it back!"

Amazingly the race officials feel it is Adam's fault, during his half marathon he should have been keeping an eye on his bike...
Great coverage in the Ottawa Citizen.

Just wow...

I shared the information with my friends on my Facebook and asked specifically that my cyclist and triathlete acquaintances be on the lookout for this bike.

This is so disheartening to see this happen in the triathlon community.

I have also sent the same to friends in Ottawa

Last year - a friend of mine had her wetsuit, goggles, footwear, etc. stolen at the Guelph 2 triathlon on Sept 1, 2012; they left the bike but moved it to another location

I hope this gets resolved...

Good luck

WOW

I'm really disappointed by Christine's response!  I sort of figured that a secured transition - especially at an IM or 70.3 where they often ask you check in your bike a day before - is included in the cost of the race.  This will make me think twice before ever doing a Somersault event again.

“First and foremost it’s the athletes’ responsibility for their equipment and their gear. We advertise that so when they sign up for the event they are aware of it,” she said. “We do have transition zone volunteers as well as our own staff, but they are not watching an athlete take their bike from transition while the event is going on.

“We are not responsible for monitoring their equipment.”

What is the liability for a tri event? Is it our responsibility to have the bike secured in transition?

What happened really sucks, but I'm wondering in the bigger picture is the liability on all of us to secure our bikes/equipment? Or is there any onus on the organization putting on the race to protect this equipment? I doubt any of us will ever face the same thing it sounds very rare....but when you have several thousand in equipment hanging on a steel bar surrounded by snow fencing..while your gone swimming/running....

I think there is an easy fix.  Everyone gets a bracelet with their bib # on it and a sticker for their bike.  The sticker must be on the bike when entering transition and no one is allowed in transition but an athlete with a bracelet.  Volunteers check the bike against the bracelet when exiting.  Done!  No exceptions.

The wheels are my first area of concern and I have started to shop around. I find it nauseating to think of spending the same amount for wheels as my bike. Any help?
