North Myrtle Beach Triathlon - Triathlon

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
United States
Set Up Events
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 43m 6s
Overall Rank = 92/107
Age Group = 70-75
Age Group Rank = 2/2
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5AM had a slim-fast drink and drove to North Myrtle Beach arriving at 6AM. They need to have signs directing people to the parking lot. I found it but had to turn around and go back a few blocks. Set up transition and had plenty of time to get to the swim start.
Event warmup:

Just stretching and trying to loosen up.
Swim
  • 22m
  • 700 yards
  • 03m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

I'm still not comfortable with an open water swim.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure I know the rules and not second guess myself. I lost two minutes that wasn't necessary.
Transition 1
  • 03m 30s
Comments:

No time given for T1 so this is a guess. I did take a little extra time getting the sand off my feet and that did make me more comfortable for the bike and run.
What would you do differently?:

Should have poured water on my feet to get the sand off more quickly.
Bike
  • 44m
  • 13 miles
  • 17.73 mile/hr
Comments:

I love this bike course but hate the roads. (Does that make sense?) Out along the ocean for 3 miles then back 7 miles on a parallel road with very light traffic that passes the transition area and a short way through town and continuing until a turn back along the beach for another three miles. Great support from the police and volunteers at all the intersections.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more and push a little harder when the wind was with me.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Fairly quick through T2 as I already was wearing my running shoes. I don't usually bother with bike shoes in a sprint.
What would you do differently?:

I should have taken a gel in transition with some water. Actually I should have taken it at the end of the bike, but that section is very technical.
Run
  • 32m 33s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

My time was better than a stand alone 5k I did last week so I guess I must have done something right. However I felt as slow as molasses.
What would you do differently?:

I didn't drink enough on the bike and I think that affected my run.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a coke and hung out with the other guy in my age group. Turns out he has completed IM Florida a few times so I guess it's OK to get beat by him.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am just too slow of a runner, other than that I have no excuses this time.

Event comments:

I like this race. Now if they would just remove the jellyfish, cool the water so that it is wetsuit legal, and repave some of the roads it would be my favorite race.

Course: Way too long! The moving buoys confused everyone. I was swimming the right line but was all alone so I wasted time going around a green buoy that wasn't necessary! Got one minor jellyfish sting and also hit something swimming near me that wasn't another triathlon.

I went down to the beach the day before to scout out the course, and it was glorious...the sun was out, the sea was as smooth as glass, and only a hint of a breeze was blowing. “Perfect,” I thought.

As a triathlete, there is one acronym that you just can’t fathom ever having next to your name in a race report – DNF: DID NOT FINISH.
