North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
United States
Set Up Events
62F / 17C
Total Time = 1h 10m 31s
Overall Rank = 3/138
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 1/6
Pre-race routine:

Got 30 minutes of sleep the night before. Lot of people out having a good time could be heard all night. Took a quick shower and bathed in sunscreen, ate some breakfast and went down to the transition area outside the hotel.
Event warmup:

ran 2 miles, stretched, sprinted a little, did a quick swim past the breakers.
Swim
  • 17m 42s
  • 700 yards
  • 02m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

Wow. Where to start? waves were rough, knocked my goggles off but luckily I was able to catch them and get them back on. Got stung 5 times by jellyfish. Sighting buoys got dragged further from shore by the rip tide. Fun first ocean swim. Once i got past the breakers the swim was pretty typical, except for the jellyfish.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure there is anything i could have done. Put goggles under swim cap like i normally do to prevent them from getting pulled off.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

no data, lumped in with swim time. my HRM became unhooked and i wasted a lot of time trying to put it back on here before tossing it on the ground.
Bike
  • 33m 47s
  • 13 miles
  • 23.09 mile/hr
Comments:

I liked the course, was nice to race something flat for once. The road was a little rough in spots but not too bad. strong headwind in some areas when riding along Ocean Blvd, but didn't get any tailwind help when we went a few streets over in the opposite direction.

T2 was included, garmin avg was 25 mph
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

included in bike time, went smooth
Run
  • 19m 3s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Nice to run a course with no hills. Was hard to judge my effort since I had no HRM. I was told i was 4th off the bike with the 3 in front having had a 3 minute head start on the swim, open racers, so i knew i wasn't going to catch anyone. didn't see any other runners the whole time in front or behind. got some good encouragement from riders on the course.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

talked about jellyfish and bikes

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the ocean swim for sure.

Event comments:

the swim was the hilliest part of the race, very flat fast course. Lots of volunteers out everywhere and very well organized and run. Will probably do it again in the future if it fits my schedule.

I went down to the beach the day before to scout out the course, and it was glorious...the sun was out, the sea was as smooth as glass, and only a hint of a breeze was blowing. “Perfect,” I thought.

As a triathlete, there is one acronym that you just can’t fathom ever having next to your name in a race report – DNF: DID NOT FINISH.
