TBF Racing
78F / 26C
Sunny
Total Time = 53m 48s
Overall Rank = 13/47
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 7/18
Pre-race routine:

woke up at the hotel and got dressed and loaded up the van. The girls were very sleepy. We got a late start.
Event warmup:

Swam 50 or so yards before my wave started then headed over to the start
Swim
  • 07m 3s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was awesome. I have never tried to go out hard right off the start on a race swim start before. With only 18 men in my wave I figured this was the time to try it. At the horn I went full (reckless) sprint for the first 75 to 100 yards. At about 60 yards I realized I was elbow to elbow with another swimmer and we were alone. I could see a couple of swimmers close together maybe 5 yards ahead of us when I sighted. I kept motoring on and the other guy faded a bit. At the turn buoy at about 200 yards I glanced back and I was a few feet ahead of him and pretty solidly in 4th. I held that position and exited the water 4th in my wave.
What would you do differently?:

As hard as I started I only knocked 7 seconds from my previous race time for this course, but faster is faster. I do need to do more 400 yard sprints leading up to this race for training if I go again next year.
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Felt much faster than last race but I was actually slower than last race here. I did wrap my goggles and ear plugs in my swim cap and leave it in the arm of my wetsuit and that worked great.
What would you do differently?:

Need more practice going sockless and that would save some time
Bike
  • 26m 10s
  • 8.3 miles
  • 19.03 mile/hr
Comments:

I went hard from the start and tried to maintain as best I could. I was passed by a handful of guys on the bike course. I forgot to put my water bottle on the bike when I set up transition! I didn't realize until I was already out on the bike course, DOH! It cost me a lot because I already had a bit of a sore throat and I wasn't able to keep my throat wet during the hard effort. According to my bike computer the bike course was .3 miles longer than last race.
What would you do differently?:

Remember the water bottle, stupid! And of course train more on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

my fastest T2 ever even with a 2 second or so hesitation and almost turning down the wrong aisle to my transition spot
What would you do differently?:

Still need to get yankz laces in my race shoes for these super sprints and train some short steep hills for any races at Rancho Seco.
Run
  • 17m 29s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

This run was hard. I had to get water for a very parched throat at both aid stations on the run (run start and just after the turnaround). I did manage to pass a couple people, but had a couple pass me too. The pace was about all I had in me on this day.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around trying to catch my breath. Got water and drank it then layed on the grass in the shade

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of focused training, sore throat, warm temps, smoke in the air. I'm full of excuses.

Event comments:

A very fun race. I'm glad TBF decided to do this one and I hope they will keep it on the schedule for next year.

I was awarded a trophy for second best costume!

Solid race. Close enough to PR to not worry and if the bike course was really longer that would do it anyway. And the swim from year to year can have some variation too. Year to year comparisons are very hard due to the huge number of race day factors which can be different.

Race day success is getting everything you have out of your body on whatever you bring to the table that day. It sounds like you absolutely did that. And there always seems to be a glitch, like forgetting your water bottle, on these sprints! You represented the junkies well.

Good job, Vero!!   I'm glad you pushed it and were happy with your time.  What a fun race.  Congrats on walking away with a 2nd place podium spot for the costume!   I enjoyed the pictures on Facebook.

A great race!

Trying to go helter skelter for a sprint beginning at the swim sounds like a really great way to start.  I wondered if you did any sort of warm up at all.  Some push ups can help get your HR elevated and get your shoulders loosened up and ready to take some stress.

Going hard for the entire race, keeping as hard an effort as possible, regardless of the finishing time, makes for a very solid race.  While some of my races I've been disappointed with times, when I know I've gone all out I am far more satisfied.

Congrats!

Congrats Vero you had a great race and you shouldn't worry about any of the times. You did a grea job with you swim, bike and run giving it a full effort. You also did well with your transitions. We all forget stuff as well so I wouldn't worry about forgetting the water bottle. I love the costume theme and that was great doing the race dressed as Superman, very cool man! I'm glad you enjoyed the day it looks like this was a really fun race.

Podium!!  Congrats!  Laughing

Awesome job trying something new on the swim (I don't entirely buy the "nothing new on race day," as that's how you learn - maybe nothing crazy new, but trying the sprint swim start paid off and got you both a great place and, I'll bet, some nice clean water!).

Great race, and I loved the pics (crazy!).

Matt

Cotswold super sprint - UK. Lots of bodies colliding, I swam half over someone, got kicked by some bloody breaststroker, and as a mob we poured towards the first buoy.

Already a cyclist and not a bad swimmer, I figured all I had to do was build up to running a few miles and I’d be ready to go. The challenge invigorated me, and I ran out to buy new running shoes.

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"

There are so many reasons I love this sport and extremely buff, handsome men disrobing next to me is one of them.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?

All you have to do is say you’re a triathlete and you intimidate the whole world. No matter how much you bench press or what you lift or how many squats you can do.

Get inspired to race a triathlon even if your older.
