The Nation's Triathlon
78F / 26C
Sunny
Total Time = 4h 32m 12s
Overall Rank = 2838/2862
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 310/310
Pre-race routine:

Full race report at www.diughboytoironman.com as always.
Event warmup:

Just getting there was an adventure.
Swim
  • 47m 51s
  • 1500 meters
  • 47m 51s / 1500 meters
Comments:

Surprised at how slow i was, nearly the time of my HIM swim. I didn't feel like I was off-course terribly, though I did drift somewhat at the beginning. Washington monument shape was novel.
What would you do differently?:

Swim for real. Introduce myself to the amateur proctologists I met in the water.
Transition 1
  • 04m 51s
Comments:

I'm surprised this didn't take longer considering the distance to transition.
Bike
  • 1h 40m 53s
  • 40 kms
  • 23.79 km/hr
Comments:

My shifting was off, ever since having it tuned up by the tech. Shifting to big ring was off. The back gears would have to be all the way to smallest or the front wouldn't shift. Took me a while to figure out how to work it.
What would you do differently?:

Ride in better shoes to avoid hot spots. Good thing I picked up new shoes after race.
Transition 2
  • 03m 18s
Run
  • 1h 55m 21s
  • 10 kms
  • 11m 32s  min/km
Comments:

Took my time.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster. Duh.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk with family to metro approx 243 miles away, by their estimation.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Usual suspects, and finally identified bike shoe issues.

Event comments:

Low score for post race based on the food tent. Almost empty for athletes when I arrived. Spectators were supposed to have food to buy, but the vendor closed down early. Little kids can be cranky when tired hungry and thirsty. I snagged them water at finish and the last cookie and peanuts from athlete table. Took no more than would I would normally eat, gave it to them. Also, it should never happen that a race doesn't have the finisher medals at the finishing line.

Had some of the same problems this year at the Rock n Roll DC Marthon which is also a Competitor Group event....Glad I decided not to do Nations again after I found out they took over. Double bike loop in DC would stink with all those people racing.

Yikes - sounds like these guys aren't the best at putting on a race...

Good on ya' for getting out there!  Really $ucks not to have food for the little ones (been there - ugh).

Did like the pic of you leaning on the monument, though.  Laughing

Every year thousands of triathletes spend excessive amounts of time and money on training, only to show up to the biggest race of the season with little to no plan.
