Subject: New or used Felt bike
Newbie with first tri bike pulling the trigger here, just can't decide weather to buy a used entry level Felt b16 2011 with ultegra components , or buy a new one with 105. Difference between the two would probably be around $400 that I can use to buy some gear. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

Buy whichever is cheaper.  Once you get your bike engine tuned up, you can worry about spending more on a bike!

EDIT:  ASSUMING the used one isn't beat all to hell.

After you get a fitting, decide if those two are actually what will fit you best.

If it's in decent condition, get the used one. Most damage is visible without really knowing what you're looking for.

Hi,

Felt B16 2011 with Ultegra components is one hell of a bike, if it is in good condition and IT FITS YOU, I would get this one instead of a new one.

There is positives and drawbacks to each option.

Many times if you get the new one from the LBS, they will include a free fitting, (around 150 value), and free maintenance for a year or so.
While if you get it used, you might need to pay for the fitting, and some of the maintenance and adjustments needed.

If the price difference is right, you can use the extra cash, for other goodies, like pedals, helmet, or whatever you might need to add.

I currently ride a B16 2012 with Ultegra and I can tell you it is an awesome ride.

I had a similar choice to make exactly one year ago. I had the chance to buy a very well equiped, used Orbea from an outfit that rented tri bikes for races or a new Felt B-16. Cost was similar, Orbea had similar components but I ended up buying the new bike from my local shop. Biggest factors were the chance of something being wrong with the bike or getting the wrong size by buying the used bike. The new bike is still new and I trust my local shop to put me on the right size and stand behind it after the sale. A year later and I never regretted the new bike purchase.

the 2011 frame is a fine steed.  I've got 5000 miles on my (B10 - same frame).  It's comfortable, stiff and has a nice long/low geometry.  A new B16 has the same frame as the 2011 version, and sells for $1800.

A new B14, which has the new DA based design is only $2200, and is pretty spectacular.

Might be out of your price range, but I'd suggest selling your first born to just upgrade to the B14. There's nothing competitive within $1000 of that price.  (flame away, I'm a member of the Felt mafia)

The frame is still the same design, and I believe the 105 on the new model is the trickle down design of the Ultegra that was available in 2011. So the mechanicals are actually the same as well. So if the used bike is in good condition then definitely go used. Also look at the steering tube and seat post, if they are cut shorter than you need to be fit properly then its not worth it.

If it fits and you know the history of the bike and are comfortable with the way the last owner treated it then by all means get used.

If the past is unknown, I would say no. Some problems with the frame and fork might not be visible on the surface.

I say this because I ride my tri bike on singletrack when the mood hits me. Is it bad for it? i don't know! But it's hella fun!
