Hattiesburg, Mississippi

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 12m 11s
Overall Rank = 7/280
Age Group = masters
Age Group Rank = 3/45?
Pre-race routine:

Got to Hattiesburg the night before. Drove the bike course. Picked up packet then dinner.
Morning of the race the usual breakfast. Got to race site around 6:05-6:10.
Event warmup:

Easy warm up run and swim a few minutes prior ro race start
Swim
  • 08m 8s
  • 586 yards
  • 01m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

One of my better swims despite starting toward the end of the line.. Stayed to the right and avoided most swimmer until the last 75 yards. Felt comfortable through out and very controlled.
Transition 1
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

T1 was good. Wearing the ROKA shorts gave me good buoyancy and are so much easier to get off than a wetsuit. Race was wetsuit legal but given short distance I felt going without would be better.
Bike
  • 43m 4s
  • 16.5 miles
  • 22.99 mile/hr
Comments:

Solid but not spectacular bike. Started out with power in 250 watt range but seemed to back off in the middle of the bike leg. Picked it up over the last 2-3 miles and ended up 242/243.
Course was fairly crowded given my late start. Should have pushed harder and sucked it up.
What would you do differently?:

Need to commit to working harder on the bike in shorter events. .
Transition 2
  • 00m 33s
Comments:

One of the faster T2s. Good rack position near bike entry and everything went smoothly
Run
  • 19m 37s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

This felt hard from the beginning. Never felt like I was in control and breathing was hard throughout. Course just does not give you a chance to recover. Felt like I really struggled and would have hoped to be 15-30 seconds faster.
What would you do differently?:

I pushed to my limit so gave it what I had that day.
Post race
Warm down:

Short cool down. Visited with friends and hung around for drawings and awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really. Its been a good season. This was my 11th race of the year. Can't say I was burned out but probably not at my peak either. Satisfied with the result. Always happy to make top 10 overall.

Event comments:

Race was well done. Really quick posting results. Lots of prizes in drawing. A little slow to get to awards but can't complain. They do a good job with the race.
I ended up getting bumped up to masters from grandmasters based on placing and getting 3rd there.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
