Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 530. Had a pop tart and bottle of water for breakfast. Drank a soda on my way to the race (didn't make any coffee)
Event warmup:

Did a short warm up jog. Probably about 1/2 mile
Run
  • 1h 27m 40s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 06m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

5k and half started at the same time and ran the same course the first 3 miles. I went out a little quicker than I wanted, probably would have finished about 7th in the 5k when we split and I was told only 1 person was ahead of me for the half. It stayed that way the entire run. Winner beat me by about 6 minutes. Planned on running a 5-5-5 plan. First 5 miles were to be at a pace of 6:45-50. I actually ran a 6:40 the first 5. Second 5 miles was to be 6:35-40. Actually went 6:39. Last 5k was to be anything faster than 6:35. Actual was 6;45. I think I could have went a little faster the last 5k had I had someone to chase. At that point the leader was probably about 5 minutes ahead and there was no one behind me, that I could hear or see.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. This was a 5 min PR for my half marathon from this same course last year.
Post race
Warm down:

Beer :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really. I went almost exactly the time my coach and I had decided was possible.

Event comments:

It was a fun race that benefits a lot of local charities in my community.

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
