 643   |  Subject: Which aero helmet?Well I'm in the market for an aero helmet. Not in a huge rush to get one but it does seem like a good time to get one with the closeout specials. Which aero helmet would you guys recommend? I sweat...a lot. I mean I've met no one who sweats more than on me the bike or run so I need something with at least a few vents to keep me cool. I was interested in the Lazer Tardiz, since it has a decent amount of vents and I like that it has a hole for water. I searched about and other helmets have maybe 2 vents and are completely covered. I know it's a toss up between staying cool and being aero so I'm up for suggestions. I signed up for IMWI, which I assume would be on the cooler side (lower 80's?) on race day, so maybe I'm making too much out of it but I'm still interested in people's options on their helmets: good...bad... anything. I'd bite the bullet on the Tardiz but the color/size I want is sold out (for the cheaper 2013 model) and I'm not willing to shell out $200 yet for a 2014. |

They just came out with the next generation of the Wingspan, so you can get the first at very reasonable prices. As for ventilation, it's one of the best, if not the best, ventilated aero helmet. And super adjustable at that! For the front vent, you can completely close it, cover it with a mesh or keep it completely open and the tail can either be open or closed. Plus it's really light (which doesn't sound like much of an advantage, but your neck will thank you over long distances). |

I'm so worried about the heat, that I'll only get a white helmet to help keep it cooler. Thanks for the advice and I'll keep a look out. What's the hottest you guys have worn your helmets? Any issues with sweat in eyes? |

I'm originally from northern EU, so heat is not something that I'm used to… I races in 100+F with my black Rudy Wingspan, and honestly, not much warmer than my standard road helmet, the ventilation works that well. Yes, once in a while I get sweat in my eyes, but I get that with my road helmet as well…. just wear a beanie or a cap under the helmet to keep the sweat out, or in a race, just something that you have to deal with. |

The wingspan, advantage and selector are all on discount pretty often and all of those test well repeatedly (for a large # of people) in the wind tunnel. Of those, the Selector is probably the least breathable... if you believe in that heat myth. |

It can be adjusted to let the air flow through it. helps cool you and stay aero. Also as mentioned they are on sale a lot. Search for online discount codes and something might pop up. Thats how I got mine. |

There are 3 helmets that are more traditional shape but provide as much aero benefit as many true aero helmets and even come close to the fastest aero helmets. But they are really well ventilated. Less goofy for everyday day riding. Smaller to travel with, Lighter. The LG course, Giro Air Attack and Specialized Evade Jordan Rapp on ST went to the tunnel with the Evade. While not quite as fast as the McLaren (which you can't buy in the US) it was the fastest Specialized helmet available in the US. Giro has published numbers and the AA is a few watts less than the selector. The guys at erosports have had great things to say about the LG If you need ventilation, these may be really good options for you. I have a Giro A2 and the Air Attack. I tested both and the difference was marginal. |
