Thanks. I am looking forward to it. Also planning on doing a 2.4mile OWS in July at an event not too far away and possibly the Aqua/Velo of Challenge AC in June. If I can swing the Challenge event financially, that will be 2-100+mile rides and 2- 2.4mile OWS as practice and should help me mentally for sure.

It's so awesome to read about all of the great rides and runs folks have been having. I ended up having a required extra two rest days this weekend as my allergies decided to move into my lungs and I decided to try to boost my immune system instead of ending up on antibiotics I've been back strong the last two days so feeling good about my decision to rest though it was really hard to make!

I had a good early morning ride yesterday and today I did an 850m swim followed by a 4mi run. I've added 10mins of a yoga stretch series after running and I think it's doing me good. I'm excited to try for my first OWS in awhile this weekend...I feel like I've been improving a lot in the pool but we'll see how much it transfers over when I get back in real water

Hope everyone else is having a good training week!

Good strategy on taking the rest days Tiffany.  Its early in the season and getting rid of chest congestion issues is more important.  I had a good lunchtime swim but now I'm headed out into a snowstorm (expect to get up to 10") for my afternoon short run.

I am going to sign up to race the Challenge AC Aqua/Bike as a tune up for IMMT. Website says average water temp is around 65 degrees. Anyone think there will be a problem if I wear a sleeveless wetsuit? Not sure If I have ever swam in water that cold before so I was not sure if having a sleeveless suit would impact my swim in a negative way or not. Maybe an extra swim cap or something?

What's the swim distance?  Personally I would wear a full wetsuit just on speed factors alone compared to a sleeveless.  Keeping my arms warmer in the cold water is an added benefit.  I have a neoprene cap I wear in colder water that you can wear under the race cap provided by the race - or wear a double regular cap.

Its the full aqua bike so 2.4mile swim. I dont have the money for a full and I have swam in one before and found it pretty restricting on my arms/shoulders. I might be able to borrow someones locally but I have to figure that out. I am not sure what 65 degree water feels like so I think I need to find some OWS soon and put a thermometer in their so I can measure the temp and try to swim and see what it feels like.

Hey all. Rode for 90 mins this morning. Watched Invictus...good film. Was hoping to ride for 3-4hrs, but was up way too late and just couldn't get up early enough to do so. I'll make-up for it later tonight with a second biking session. That said, it's md-60s, blue sky and sun, so I might substitute a second bike session for a run or bike/run brick. We'll see how the day progresses.

But first...it's time to dye some Easter eggs...my daughter is so excited!

3 hour bike ride yesterday and a 6 mile trail run today. Looking forward to a rest day tomorrow. Got a half Marathon coming up on Saturday that I am looking forward too.

2.5 hour workout on the Computrainer followed by a 30 min run on Saturday.  Hour bike and 30 min run Sunday in 70 degree weather.  We had a 12" snowstorm and 2+ foot snowdrifts in my driveway last Thursday so its been a wild swing in weather.  Half marathon coming up for me this Saturday as well.

I had the race of my life this weekend. Ran the half in 1:57:59 and set a PR by 24 minutes!!! Race Report to follow sometime this week but I had a blast. Looks like all this IM training is really paying off.

Birkie-How did your run go?

Great job Matt!  Incredible improvement on your PR!!   My race went pretty well at the Get in Gear Half Marathon in Minneapolis.  I managed a course PR for me by 4 seconds (well off my 1:17 half PR) which would have been faster if I hadn't noticed an old friend that yelled to me from the sidelines and I stopped, ran back about 40 yards, shook his hand and turned back to continue the race.  I ended up with 1:25:40 which put me at 18th out of 1182 runners overall and 1st in my AG (65 runners).

I rode for 3 hours (indoors) and then ran for 3.6 miles - a decent early morning brick. Movie choice for the bike leg was The Great Escape. The brick felt pretty good. I was hoping to run for longer, but my daughter got up and was really hungry for breakfast, so I cut my run short. Having said that, it was a good morning nonetheless.

Tomorrow...maybe a long-ish run.

i did one of those 200 mile relays last weekend and then took all week off to recover… and to prepare for a crazy hilly bike ride yesterday at the Tour de Cashiers - i did the metric and it had ~8000 ft of climbing! Taking today off again and then tomorrow officially starts my 20-week training plan for China.

worked crazy long hours this weekend so not much went on for me this weekend but I leave Thursday for 280 miles of cycling over 4 days!! excited to get some quality time in the saddle on escorted/traffic free roads! Average daily mileage will be around 65 but one day we do 78 miles. I cant wait to brick run after each day to see how my legs feel.

Matt - 280 miles in 4 days....sounds like fun, enjoy. Though, a brick each day...that might be a bit much. Just be careful no to go too overboard with the bricks. In any case, how are you feeling about your training for IMMT? 104 days till race day!

I ran 10 miles last night, and overall, it felt pretty good. I wasn't pushing myself, I ran a fairly comfortable pace (averaged 8:48/mile). It was getting a bit cold and windy last night, but conditions were pretty good all things considered. It's amazing how running in the dark on quiet streets is so different than running during the day. The smells of nature and the ocean seems are much more vibrant at night, and the air is so much fresher. That said, there are a number of raccoons, possums and skunks that wander around my town at night, so there are some negatives.

From a racing standpoint, I'll probably complete IMMT after the sun goes down, so night time training runs are an important part of my training regimen.

Does anybody else do night time training runs or have had their coaches suggest they do them? Just curious.

I wouldn't have my athletes do night runs specifically for training for an expected night time IM finish.  I just assume that everyone has had to run in the dark at one time or another especially in winter just due to job demands, life getting in the way, etc.  But specifically for simulating an IM finish, I don't think there is much to be gained.  Most courses are fairly well lit for night time finishers.

I am feeling pretty good about my IMMT training. I think I will always think I am not doing enough but I am following the plan and listening to my body. Today I was supposed to run but I was extremely sore and beat down so I took an unplanned rest day. It was kind of hard to do but I know that it was the right thing. I am really looking forward to the ride this week and I am getting a new saddle put on my tri bike when I get back. I signed up for Challenge AC Aqua Velo so hopefully I come out of that with a good time which will boost my confidence going into IMMT.

I will be careful with my runs this week. I was thinking 1-2 miles a day, nothing major.

Does anybody else do night time training runs or have had their coaches suggest they do them? Just curious.

The most valuable thing you can do for your endurance training is to schedule a weekly 2-4hr long ride from now until the end of time. Simply make this “what you do” every Saturday or Sunday morning.
