BT Hivemind:

My husband recently starting getting into working out/ fitness (of his own accord). He works at a university and does personal training there... runs sometimes on the treadmill at our house.

Looking for some ideas for inexpensive gifts (under $40)... he's pretty new but has good shoes a couple pairs of shorts and tech tees.

Entry level HRM's, even from Polar are around that - more like $50.

Ipod Shuffle is $50.

It comes in at $100, but I have a Fitbit and like it.  It's particularly good for people just starting out.  More of a fun gadget for those experienced to training (but I still like it).  It helps you track diet, sleep, calories, and other things.  All as important as working out.

If he is just starting and doesn't have any decent gear, these shirts are not that expensive and are without a doubt the most comfortable I've ever worn.

You can search aroudn and find more toned down colors, but the price is always around 40 bucks.  I have some going on 3 years and still holding up well.

I agree that socks typically would not be the gift I was hoping for but as someone new to fitness he might not yet know how nice merino wool or other synthetic "tec" type socks might be. Especially if he's still running in Hanes cotton ankle socks. I think running socks would make a great stocking stuffer.

If he doesn't have an ipod, then a shuffle is great
If he does have an ipod, the little Nike thingy that tracks distance and works with ipod is kind of cool.

Now socks with a built in electronic thing could work, but if there is no electronics in it, I would pass on the socks :-)

Nice jump rope.

Foam Roller.

Sweat proof headphones if he likes to listen to music while training.

Running hat/visor? Some like this, some don't. I never run with out a hat.

jump rope - 10ish bucks and it's hard to beat from a cost to potential benefit standpoint.

It's curious in a thread that is simply soliciting various ideas for gifts your first two posts are criticizing someone else's suggestions rather than simply contributing one of your own.  Must everything be a debate/argument?  I would find that tiresome.  But to each there own, I suppose.

Kido - it was meant in a smiling way, I can't help the way people take things, and it's kind of hard to worry about since somebody is always going to get their panties in a bunch depending on how they chose to read a thread, history with poster, etc.  I say no socks....and I'm not tired.

I agree with the foam roller and hat

Body Glide also makes a nice stocking stuffer

Not sure if he's got any interest in triathlons, but maybe Yankz or some other quick lacing system

Headlamp - one can never have too many headlamps regardless of fitness goals. Nice lightweight/liner gloves - I have some Smart Wool gloves that I run in that could easily double as daily wear.

I really like the foam roller idea.  However, after his first use, he may question if you really love him anymore to subject him to it.

I'll propose a exception to the no-sock group for your consideration...

If someone gave me a some compression socks from CEP, 2XU, etc.  I would be pretty stocked.

I probably need to be forthcoming here.  Although I never thought I would win, back in September I was elected as President of MASSAGE (Men Against Socks/Sweaters As Gifts, Etc.)  I haven't really been as active a President as I intended to be and so when I saw that post I used it as an opportunity to show the membership that I was still relevant, because frankly, we have drawers full of socks and sweaters that we've been given over the years that we never wear. I did feel a bit sorrowful for using this particular thread to make a stand so, as you can see, I did offer a suggestion of my own for a gift idea.  We, the membership of MASSAGE understand if our message doesn't resonate with you, but to be honest, we're not taking any new memberships until after the holidays anyway, when we are usually inundated with applications.  With that in mind, Kido, on behalf of the membership of MASSAGE, Merry Christmas to you and yours!!

x2 on this idea, you can never have enough tees. However, we have a Reebok outlet and a Nike factory store in my town. Most of the tech tees are $10-$15, so if you have one of those local, go stock up.

Socks are also cheap here as well. Same as tees, you can never have enough!

Love the foam roller idea as well

I tend to use "The Stick" more often than I use my foam roller these days.  For me, the foam roller is great for the back, but I love the stick for my legs...which is where all my soreness is these days.  Requires less physical space to use and store, and also portable.  Much easier to use while watching TV as well.

Maybe a gym bag if he doesn't have one already.

Mental toughness is skill. You need to learn how to suffer. You practice perseverance everyday when you are out training in the bad weather, when you ride or run further than you have ever gone.

My dog is an intelligent runner. She does a big stretch before she does anything. She starts out slowly and gradually builds up speed until we are running very fast.
