Ugh, if it's not one nagging injury it's another. My foot is fine now however my wrist has a minor sprain from the weekend. Went swimming today and only managed about 600m before I decided it would be better to rest it than push through the pain. Fortunately my next two events are runs (10k this Saturday, 13.1 in 1.5 weeks) so I have about 2.5 weeks before my first triathlon of the season. Yup, three race weekends in a row! The triathlon is a short mountain bike sprint (Wildflower) so the swim will be mercifully short (~400m) if my wrist is still bothering me.

Good morning folks.

It's funny - I've changed up my swimming - lots of drills now, and my last two swims have felt pretty good, as opposed to the grumbles of frustration from my last few. Today's swim included fist drills, fingertip drills, mixed pull focus drills, kick drills . . . you name it, I probably did it. I am still surprised at how complicated swimming well actually is. If/when my wife and I have children, those kids are swimming from the get-go; even if I spend the next 10 years swimming regularly, my future hypothetical 8-year-old would wipe the deck with me.

Nutrition has been good this week - office brought in veggie trays on Monday and Tuesday (yay!) and oreos and chocolate almonds yesterday (boo!). Also, it's screwy that I am cheering veggies trays and have had salads for lunch every day this week, and [bold] liked them [/bold].

St. Arnolds(hours)-local beer..disappointed. Always disappointed with local beers under performing

Hawks game 1. Overtime. I love/hate overtime hockey. On the edge of my seat. Hawks gave up a goal late in the third to give the blues life going into OT.
Having a Mirror pond pale ale from Deschutes.

Ran 4.15 this morning in 8:15/mi pace. Raining tomorrow, so I'm hooking up the drainer for 40 minutes. First bike in a long while. Probably get in my first swim on Saturday with long run in on Sunday.

I got in the pool today for the first time in a month. Shoulder is still not 100% but I was able to get in 400 yards with only a little discomfort. So that is a major improvement.

I'm still worried about the finishing time but I could do the swim in 3:00 per 100 and the bike at 14 mph and walk the marathon and still finish the thing. I wonder how much of the race is mental. If I come in able to finish a HIM can I just will myself to the finish line?

I'll post again tonight - but for Christmas, one of the books I received was Don Fink's "Be Iron Fit." One of the plans is a "finish it" plan, and I remember looking it over and thinking it wasn't enough; maybe ~10 hours per week. I'll look at it again and post the highlights.

Second: after reading through it, as screwy as it sounds, this ironman stuff isn't unattainable. The truth is probably that anyone who has ran a HM can probably walk a marathon on any given day, and a triple crank plus an 11-28 cassette means anyone can climb, and there's no shame in walking up a hill (been there, done that).

I'm not saying you need to make a decision now, or ever, about how to approach it. The more I think about it, somone going in with the mindset to "just finish it" is probably going to have a much better day than I am. My whole day is going to be dominated by my brain going "Slower! Slower than that!" while my heart and legs and adrenaline are screaming "Let's rock!!!!!!!" and my eyes are going "Chase the next person down!"

If I bring my "A" game and race the best race of my life (of any race), I'm still looking at 12.5 hours; 13:50 to 14:30 is probably more like it. Comparing that to a 16:30 effort, going in to run 16:30, who's going to have the better day? A 16:30 is going to think at mile 20, "hey, maybe I'll jog for a few minutes," whereas I've spent my **entire** day dreading mile 20 and holding back on the bike.

What is your running history?

Been running 10Ks more than 15 years ago, but with no real training. In the last 2-3 years, a more 'formal' training with 3 HM that I really enjoyed and one full marathon in which I suffered too much (need to do it again to keep a good memory...)

What is your current running training look like?

2-3 days per week 8 to 10k run, and 1 long run on the weekends (12-15k)

What is your current typical running pace (zone 2)?

5.10 to 5:20 per km, 1/2 marathon PB is 1:45.

What injuries have you had, and how did it work out?

Extremely lucky, at 47 no real injuries yet, may be because I run like a diesel engine, not too fast!

Favorite running shoe?

Asics no doubt! Have tried Nike and K-swiss in different models, but Asics are my shoes: GT, Nimbus, and now Kayano 20, my best shoes ever!

Just back from a few days off with the family in southern Spain - beautiful sun to run on the beach with the only risk of being back with a sunburn.
Today, 90 min bike ride. I really love good weather!
I am about to do a 2 day-workshop to make beer at home: any suggestions? I can choose between pale ale, brown ale, pilsner....

You are living the life. So glad to have you in the BDAAS - so I can live vicariously through you.

Glad you asked about the beer - finally I know something about. When you make your first couple of batches of beer - it's important to do two things. First - brew something you love. Second - brew something easy. The first batch I brewed was a brown. It doesn't get much simpler. IPA's are pretty easy since the hops hide a lot of flaws in the brew. No matter what happens. Have a blast!

Charles - I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question by posting the just finish workout. The fact is - I agree with you that the volume is not enough. I think you would have a hard time muscling through having done less than half of the volume in the race itself. For the record - I'm pretty close to a few of these marks right now so I should be in good shape. My goal is to do as much as possible before the race so I can enjoy every minute. I have zero intention of racing that day. I know some people might disagree with that - but I know that just finishing is going to be challenge enough. My thing is I just want to stop worry about it. With all the injuries I've faced _ I'm worrying about just finishing. But I think if I can reach some minimums - I should be good to go. If I could hit some minimums - I think I will be golden. For example - if I could reach 1.5 miles in the pool, 100 on the bike and 13 on the run - I know I will be able to finish. Thanks for the support!

Wrapping up a crazy week. I'm glad I was able to squeeze in what I did during the last seven days. Being the father of 2 teen agers is tough work!

But I'm ending the week on a positive note. I was able to get in the pool twice - once for 400 and again for 500. It was the first time I've swum in a month - so it was a relief to be able to do it. The shoulder is still sire - but at least I'm moving closer to the goal. I also was able to get in 35 on the bike. With 6 weeks until the HIM - I'm not in great shape but I know I will finish.

In other news - the beer job didn't work out. I had a flat tire on my first day - and the guy who ran the company was a real jerk about it (sure I ran over the curb - but the case of beer I bought for everyone made them all happy). So I've got to find another way of making some $$ until I can get a teaching gig.

Wellllll, I am back for a few days. The previous weekend was a Pro AM hockey tourney. We ended up drafting Bryan Berard. Good guy with some interesting stories including some guy who allegedly stole millions from him and other people.

Weekend result....too much drinking/too much eating crap.

Followed that up with a trip to Texas. The good part was a new pair of shoes, and three great runs!

The second last day we went for a run and swim around Barton springs. What a great location for a run and a swim. Basically they made a natural pool out a springs by surrounding it in concrete. Natural bottom. Approximately 1000 feet long. Tons of swimmer in the morning doing laps while we were there. Google it.

Went to some breweries as well. Not sure if this is the same elsewhere but breweries there will open up Friday nights and Saturdays for 4-5 hours and basically charge you $10, give you a mug and 3 tokens for beers. Add food truck and it is a party...

Holiday results...too much drinking/too much eating crap.

This Thursday I am off to a hockey tourney in Banff. 4 games in 3 days. I already know the results for this weekend...too much drinking/too much eating crap.

On the bright side, this is the most I have run since Feb. 2013....ran just about 50 miles. I am at 23 now and hoping to hit 30+ this month! Hoping to stay healthy!

Saturday was a good day, I ran my favorite 10k charity run (that first inspired me into running) for the third time. Beautiful run on the beach (very low tide) from Morro Rock to Cayucos Pier, the weather and conditions were perfect. With a half marathon coming up this Sunday I treated it like a medium training day. After finishing the 10k I turned around and ran back down the beach until I found my friend who was doing her first 10k. Her goal was to run at least 4 miles before I came back for her and she had made it 4.5 miles. We then walked most of the remaining 1.5 miles with a few bursts of running when she was able to. Attached is a picture from the end, with the shadow of Morro Rock looming 6 miles back where we started.

Hey all,

 

It's been awhile since I last posted. I've been trying to keep with the posts but school has been hectic. 2 presentations, 2 papers, and 3 exams have kept me holed up in my office. I haven't done hardly any training (to be fair last week was a recovery week so I didn't have much planned). This week is looking like a bit of a write-off too because of school. I'm running a half on Sunday though, feeling good about that. My birthday was on the 20th and my wife got me a new Garmin 310xt with HRM, quick release, cadence/speed sensor and TT bar mount.

 

No beer lately. After the 29th when school is over there will be many beers.

Right on! Good work on the race. I hope your HM goes just as well! Also - you need to stop posting pictures - you are making me really jealous!

It's been awhile since I last posted. I've been trying to keep with the posts but school has been hectic. 2 presentations, 2 papers, and 3 exams have kept me holed up in my office. I haven't done hardly any training (to be fair last week was a recovery week so I didn't have much planned). This week is looking like a bit of a write-off too because of school. I'm running a half on Sunday though, feeling good about that. My birthday was on the 20th and my wife got me a new Garmin 310xt with HRM, quick release, cadence/speed sensor and TT bar mount.

 

No beer lately. After the 29th when school is over there will be many beers. 




Alan - sorry to hear work has been weighing you down. It sounds like you've got one more big week and then you can kick back, enjoy a few beers, and really focus on IMMT. Good luck during your race! Hope you kick a little a$$!

Can I tell you how nice it is to train with a body that doesn't ache. The myo facial releast seems to really be working and I really haven't hurt at all the day following a workout. Yesterday, I was able to do a major swim - 1200 yards - which is a lot considering I haven't swum in 4 weeks. I was also able to get in 45 on the bike last night and 90 on the bike today. The training is increasing and for the first time I feel good.

Today - I'm down in VA so I can take my boys to a Nats game. It's 5 dollar beer night - so I will be sure to have a full report tomorrow. I've got my longest run in a few months - 7 miles so keep your fingers crossed!

Glad to hear some good news from your camp. Even if it does involve baseball . . . given a choice between staring at the wall on the trainer or watching baseball, I'd have to think about it.

Everything's clicking for me now what the weather has gotten nice out. Spending time on the tri bike is heavenly. I sat down yesterday and watched the Quassy course preview video - not really helpful, since they run through the course in about 30 minutes, but still interesting. It reminds me of Wisconsin - lots of climbing, the word "flat" antithetical. Should be a blast.
