I'm wondering what other triathletes take after their workouts for a post workout protein drink, and why they like it. Or what other athletes take/do post workout to get the most out of their workouts. I currently take Evolution by Intek. It's pretty spendy at over $75 for 5 lbs. I'm getting low and need more, but wanted to see what other athletes take before I buy more.

I buy whey protein at Wal-Mart, $15-20 for 2 lbs, I like chocolate flavored but they have vanilla and one or two other flavors. I mix it in a blender with skim milk, berries, spinach, bananas, ice etc. I think the brand is Body Fortress.

I use brown rice protein from heath food stores.

It may not be as readily absorbed by the body as whey, but it doesn't make for stinky mixers and dissolves in almond milk much much easier.

Easy and quick. 1 scoop of Dymatize ISO 100 Vanilla Whey, 1 Cup Milk and a little bit of chocolate syrup. I'm sure there are better mixes overall but its tasty, I get my protein and I get it fast.

I do plain old chocolate milk after workout, if anything (http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/news/20100604/chocolate-milk-refuels-muscles-after-workout).  I do my protein shakes in the morning (generally strawberries, banana, milk, and whey - I use Designer Whey but my friend who bodybuilds competitively tells me Beverly International is the best stuff).

I am taking Endurox R4 by Pacific Health Laboratories.

It tastes fresh, works wonders against stiff/sore muscles/reduces recovery time and is easy on my tummy. I am lactose sensitive so some of the standard protein drinks makes me quite gassy.

I only do a recovery drink after a very hard workout (like 18+ mile run). Otherwise I like to recover with regular food.

But I use Gu brew at the moment.

We use Tera's whey, it is both gluten free and organic. I like the bourbon vanilla.
1/4 banana, 1 C frozen strawberries, 1 C coconut water and 1scoop of whey. Blend it up...yum!

I've been a fan for a while of Gaspari's Myofusion...their Probitioc series, in particular. I will add two teaspoons of powdered peanut butter to the Myofusion's chocolate flavor for a change now and then. The mixablity is great, and good taste, even just mixing with water. I've tried other brands, but I just think it's a good quality protein. (I also buy the vanilla flavor and add a scoop to whole wheat pancake mix, if I'm not in the mood for a shake (changes the texture of the pancake slightly, fyi)) Yum!

I believe the science and utility in recommending these 'recovery drinks' post-workout, but when I tried them earlier last year, there was a BIG caveat, I found.

Adding recovery drinks makes it way too easy to gain weight. I was doing one recovery drink a day after typically 90 minute efforts, and because I didn't cut down the remainder of my meal size, I actually started GAINING weight despite training 14 hours per week (to my horror.) I also didn't feel notably improved by doing these postworkout drinks as well, so I stopped using them.

With these recovery drinks, it's very easy to add 300, even 500 calories per day to your diet unintentionally. Considering that on a weight-loss diet, a -500cal per day typically results in -1/2 lbs per week, you can see what could happen in reverse if you don't cut down the meal size.

Hi Yaz,

That is a good point you are making. Make sure when you get a recovery drink that it is really a recovery drink and not a standard protein drink. Most of the standard protein drinks are made to gain muscle mass.

Also what kind of workout did you do (intensity and activity) and what was your BMI. No need to answer but muscle weighs more than fat, so depending on your starting point and workout routine it is very possible to gain weight while losing fat and size. This might be obvious to you, but thought I'd mention it just in case you hadn't considered it.

The main purpose of recovery drinks is to shorten the muscle rebuild/recovery time so you can do more (intense) exercise in shorter time, and in some cases also help rehydrate you. If your main purpose of exercise is weight loss, combined with diet, then definitely do consider what type of exercise you do - if it is low intensity aerobic exercise then maybe good rehydration will help you better achieve your goal. However if you are doing high intensity interval training or weight training, then I think recovery drinks will help you do more and lead to an overall size and fat reduction over time.

I've been drinking Naked Protein Zone Mango's for a couple years now.  I love the taste and really like the mix of carbs/protein after my workouts.

I find this is occurring after almost every workout. The pattern is always the same: freezing 10 min after a workout and 2 hours to warm up again. I am not sick. My diet is healthy.
